It could be a couple of things off hand

1. You could be breathing in more air than you are exhaling . It might be easier to alter slightly your breathing patterns so the oxygen you breathe in will be equivalent to the carbon dioxide you breathe out.

2. It could be the cold air or the dry air and your lungs are not expanding and contracting enough to adequately breathe because the air pressure is lower than normal

3. Breathe always in your nose and out your mouth for maximum air capacity.

cold weather often makes me cough after a long run. If it isn't the cold It could be due to dry weather as well. it is also more likely if you are a sprinter than a distance runner. I don't think it is unusual though. It happens to lots of people

it has nothing to do with the way you breathe

You are not breathing correctly.
You Breathe in through the nose, And out through the mouth.

probably have asthma or something eles that has to do wit your lungs don't pant just take nice long breaths. it helps me when i talk or sing while runnin. it may look weird but it works. when i need my inhaler i usually cough

a lot of air moving in and out of the lungs too fast mouth and throat dry and dust getting into your mouth
