Yes you batter them and they are fried in hot oil in a skillet.

4 to 6 green tomatoes
salt and pepper
cornmeal
bacon grease or vegetable oil
PREPARATION:
Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them to taste. Dip in meal and fry in hot grease or oil about 3 minutes or until golden on bottom. Gently turn and fry the other side.

You can spice it up with season salt or garlic added to the cornmeal and you can dip them in an egg/milk bath first before you dust them with the cornmeal.

wikipedia is your friend...

Traditional Preparation

The tomatoes are usually cut into 1/4 inch slices, dipped in buttermilk and coated with cornmeal, breadcrumbs, or flour, then fried in hot oil or grease for about 3 minutes on each side until the bottoms are browned. Alternatively, one can dip the tomatoes into beaten eggs before coating with meal for a firmer product.

The traditional recipe consists of green tomatoes sliced thinly and coated in plain coarse cornmeal. The tomatoes are then pan fried in oil. Fill the pan with vegetable oil to a depth slightly shallower than the thickness of your slices. This keeps the tomatoes from floating and thus allows gravity to hold the cornmeal to the bottom side. As a true art you must then carefully "splash" oil onto the top to allow it to firm up also. The reason for all this is that cornmeal without a "wash" like eggs tends to fall off in the oil, however with a wash the meal becomes thick and not nearly as crunchy. It is more trouble to go without a wash, but it is worth it. Flip the tomatoes after a minute or so, depending on oil temperature. Cook to a golden brown and season with salt and pepper.

Alternatively, tomatoes can be fried in bacon fat.

the following is the recipe from the unique Whistlestop Cafe, this remains open on the instantaneous and is amazingly said as the Irondale Cafe. I eat there each and each of the time. 3-4 eco-friendly tomatoes a million a million/2 cups flour a million/2 cup corn meal a million/2 tsp salt & pepper milk vegetable oil blend at the same time flour, cornmeal, salt & pepper. upload sufficient milk to create a thick batter. warmth 2 inches of oil in a large skillet. Batter each and each tomato slice, and wipe off extra. heavily position in warm oil, browning on both area. (would or received't want turning, relying on the quantity of oil) to relax, drain in a colander to keep tomatoes from turning out to be soggy. Salt to style. i'm hoping this helps - sturdy success!

yes, you batter the tomatoes before cooking. cut the tomatoes all about the same thickness so they cook evenly and then either coat them in eggs beaten or milk and dredge them in your favorite bread crumb coating (or make your own breadcrumb coating) using smashed potatoe chips, crackers or real bread. After dredging place them in a deep skillet that has oil pretty hot , leave them alone at least a couple minutes and then lift one up & peek under it to see the browness of the batter, if brown enough for you turn over and cook the other side about the same amount of time. Remove and drain on paper towels, salting or seasoning while still warm.
Sounds delicious!

I just slice the tomatoes medium thickness, dip into beaten eggs, then place into flour that has a little garlic powder mixed in it. Shake off excess. Put into a pan with your choice oil that is over medium heat. fry on each side until golden brown. Place onto paper towels to blot grease.

1 cup flour
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp pepper
1 tsp paprika
add dash of each garlic powder, onion powder, tiny tiny bit of cumin

mix together in bowl.
in another bowl beat 1 egg with 1 tsp milk.

dip sliced green tomato in egg mixture then coat with flour mixture.

cast iron skillet is the best for cooking. fill skillet with about 1/2-1" of canola oil. (its the best for you)

do not put tomatoes in until oil is HOT. Fry a few minutes on each side until color is golden brown.

drain on brown paper sack or paper towel.

YUMMMY!!

What I do (and this question is making me wish it was summer) is take a combination of flour and cornmeal, seasoned to taste with salt and pepper. Toss the green tomato slices in this and then fry.

I usually eat fried green tomatoes with ketchup.

Cut into sturdy slices (don't want them thin like on a hamburger). Salt and pepper them, then dip into a milk/egg wash.

Then dip into seasoned cornmeal or conrmeal + flour.

Pan-fry in about a ½" of oil (a bit of bacon grease added makes them especially flavorful!) for about a minute or two on each side. Drain on paper towels, season to taste, and serve!

You've gone and flung a craving on me now! :-D
