The flag of Pakistan was created in 1947 by Syed Amir Uddin Kedwaii. The (crescent) moon and the star are islamic symbols, which symbolise the commitment of Pakistan to Islam. The (crescent) moon represents progress while the star represents light and knowledge. The green background represents the muslim majority while the vertical white stripe represents the religious minorities. The flag of Turkey was created in 1844 and was initially used by the Ottoman Empire. Although it is unclear who created it, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is responsible for its adoption by the Republic of Turkey. The (crescent) moon and the star were pre-Islamic religious symbols but nowadays, they are viewed as islamic symbols. The red background symbolises the blood coming from the wars mainly against the West. They look similar because they both have on them the islamic symbol of the crescent moon and the star. It symbolises their connection to Islam and the muslim world.

Red represents the blood of the people who died for this country. For the crescent there are a few theories. Some say it's the reflection of the moon on the blood, some say moon and sun were considered gods in shamanism, hence the crescent moon is a representation of the gods.

I heard a story about this once. When there was this battle in Turkey, there was so much blood everywhere that when you looked up at the moon, the sky was red. That's how they supposedly got the idea for the red and the moon and star.

I believe the moon in Turkey is at a different phase than most. The moon is at the phase it was when Constantinople (now Istanbul) was finally taken.

Turkey was established after the Armenian Genocide. Therefore the red is the sign of blood from the victims of Armenian Genocide while the moon and the star comes with the Ottoman Empire it has nothing to do with Islam. Islam doesnt teach killing and genocide. Islam teaches respect and love.
