I would say it depends on what type of wedding it is...

Is it an afternoon party, with a reception outside? If so, then probably the best thing would be a short dress, like you'd wear to a garden party - especially in August, when it might be too hot for a long dress.

Is it an evening event? That might be the place to wear a more formal, long dress.

Depends on the time of day & how formal the wedding is.
A short ( knee length ) formal little black dress is always appropiate. Dress it up & down with accessories. If you want color, a colored wrap is very "in" this season. Diamonds are dressier & pearls or metal earings & bracelets for less dressy. Fancy rings have become popular but I like my diamond rings - I got them from my husband.
