If you are lifting weights, doing the same weight lifting exercise everyday willl do nothing but make you sore and not want to lift weights. Your muscles are flooded with lactic acid and you do cause small "tears" in the muscle, which increases the size of your muscles. If you don't let the muscle rest and repair itself at least a day between, you could cause severe damage that will stop your exercise program all together. So, if you are walking or running, you can do it everyday, if you are lifting weights, give those muscles a break for a couple of days before working them again.

muscles need time to rest and rebuild. So that is probably where the once a week thing came about. Do what is best for you. Work out your whole body every day but work out lighter so you dont feel sore the next day. Or skip a day. It doesnt matter. What ever suits you is all.

Your muscles need time to recover and repair themselves after you lift weights. When you lift weights, you are creating microscopic tears in your muscle fibers. After the workout, your body repairs the damage - and that's how your muscles get stronger.
If you work the same groups every day, you will find your muscles getting progressively more sore with each workout. Consequently, your workouts will become harder and more tiring because your muscles are not recovered. Also, if you don't allow recovery time, you won't see results as quickly! This is because most of the muscle building process takes place after you lift - during the recovery and repair period. Most importantly, working the same muscle groups every day will significantly increase your chances of injuring yourself, because those tiny tears are not getting repaired.
If you want to lift weights every day, split your routine up. Work your upper body one day and then your lower body the next day. This will still allow your muscles to get proper recovery time while keeping you in the habit of daily workouts.

Your muscles need at least 24 hours to recover. Overworking them can cause damage. Try working your upper body one day and lower body the next. You can do cardio every day.
