Say the word Christian to many non-Christians and a significant number of them will describe a Christian as judgmental, hypocritical, dishonest, and hateful. Where do you think this perception comes from?

Not many christians I have met have been very christ-like. There are a few, but their numbers pale in comparison to those who do not represent the faith well.

I think the same could be said for the word HUMAN...we are all judgmental, hypocritical, dishonest and hateful!!!

The problem is that humans like to think that there is some redeeming quality within us. Whereas SOME Christians feel empowered with the knowledge they have as to where redemption & truth and righteousness can be found. True Christians should know better than to pass judgment on anyone...and should be first to admit their sinful ways as testimony that others might believe, in redemption. True repentant Christians can see their sin and admit it openly, which leads me to wonder if those who openly, continually commit sins from your above list are truly saved or have understanding of the scriptures??? For some reason SOME claiming Christianity assume they are better than others because they may have found salvation, the case is that we are ALL still humans and ALL sinners by nature. No one can read hearts but God.

1. judgmental, hypocritical, dishonest, and hateful feelings that are inside the NON-christian that are projected onto christians

2. true negative experiences with people claiming to be christians, but would not be ackowledged by Jesus

jesus predicted that in the last days there would be a great falling away... unfortunately you are witnessing it.....only about 20% of those claiming to be christians fit the original definition...

the bible also says if the fallen away christians cannot even make it to heaven , what hope is there for the rest of humanity?

these are very bad times....if people do not meet genuine christians, how will they ever know the truth of the gospel of Jesus, how came to make our lives more in line with the heavenly will?

I think they watch too many TV evangelists and really don't know their local Pastors or Priests at all. Most Americas, at least from what I pick up here on this site is that all Christians are like President Bush. They see a few Christians they don't like for what ever reason and figure that ALL Christians are bad. However, by doing this they are acting in the same way that they accuse Christians of behaving. Turn off the TV and go to a local Church.

C'mon, it comes from Christians who are like that. There are way too many of them and it is really sad because those of us who really do know what the Bible says and try to live according to that belief get the short end. I am a Christian but I found in the Bible that it says I can do whatever I want to do but have to understand that there are consequences. The consequences are only going to be in this life if I have believed that Jesus was and is real and that he died in place of me for my sins. That doesn't mean my body won't die. It will. My spirit will live on, somewhere wherever God is. All Jesus is or ever was is our scapegoat. That is a Jewish thing. It means that he stood in our place and went to hell so we didn't have to. He didn't stay in hell, he is now with God.
The Christians who have ruined so many people's idea of God will get sternly reprimanded when they face God. I'll be just as happy about that as any non-Christian might be.

I judge a person when I get to know them, with no bias. And the christians I have known are judgmental, hypocritical, dishonest, and hateful.

From the fact that we do not care a bit about being "politically correct" and saying what ppl want us to rather than what the Bible teaches.
If we would just say something like..."Well being a Christian is what I want to do with my life but it's really not for everybody and that's okay. Everybody should just be whatever makes them happy."
No compromise. People hate it when someone will not bend their beliefs to suit what the "mainstream" ppl want.

Bottom line: TOO BAD! The truth will still be standing when the whole world is on fire!

EDIT: to Mrs. Glitterkittyy....
How would we be representing the faith "correctly", in your opinion? You left your faith behind to embrace the darkness so exactly what is the "correct" way to represent Christ??

It comes from "Life Experience" and you don't even have to be a non-Christian to have a negative impression of Christianity.
Let me just say: Ted Haggard, Jim and Tammy Bakker, and Jimmy Swaggart for starters. Then there are hundreds of Catholic priests who have messed up many lives.
Why are there more Christian religions than pages of the New Testament.?? They can't even agree with each other and they don't trust each other !
They always want their hands in your wallet, too.

The leaders, the followers, the dogma, the infestation of their beliefs into our every day lives. They sensor media and art as self appointed hierarchy of society. They swindle money from the elderly and ignorant. They blame liberal politicians for anything unchristian. They call a book of mythology "The word of god" or "The truth". They judge anyone not of their belief as inferior and doomed in an afterlife they themselves have no clue about. They dispute scientific findings with vague verses from a book of folklore. They protest gay marriage for no good reason other than it's it that same book that most of them haven't even read.
This is just in today's society I won't get into their history.
