A lot of Pagans and Wiccans get this question, and I think my answer to this would be that because we are animals. We are part of the cycle of life, as everything else is. We hold life to be sacred, but life has to be sacrificed so that other life can flourish. This includes killing things for food, for survival. Yes Pagans revere nature, but in nature killing is a necessity at times and that includes when we must eat to live. After all, we like living too :)

I believe probably the most shrewd reply could be that: Plants will also be classified as a million celled organisms. That is, they've most effective a million feel - FEEL. Animals alternatively have five senses. Although being vegan is effortlessly drinking clearly riskless and nutritious chemical substances, individuals typically argue that vegetation additionally suppose affliction while killed. Another reply to that (excuse my sadist process) however taking out all devout features from it, Piercing a pointy knife into your hand OR Piercing a pointy knife into your eyeball, tongue, throat, ears, nostril and fingers - Which one could you decide on? Vegans can justify their consuming of vegetation with the reality they desire to meet their stomachs with minimum affliction alternatively than inflicting highest affliction by way of killing a different five sensed organism to fill your belly. :)

LMAO!!! I have often wondered this about vegetarians. Not all Wiccans are Tree-hugging Plant-Eaters. Many eat beef, pork, chicken, even wild game. But the Vegetarians (especially Vegans)...the ones who protest against the cruelty against animals, do they not realize that plants live too?
STOP THE INHUMANE SLAUGHTER OF THE INNOCENT LETTUCE!!!! DO YOU NOT SEE THAT WHEN YOU CUT INTO A TOMATO IT BLEEDS RED????

There is a philosophical theory that says you don't earn negative karma if you only eat that which does not run away from you. That includes all plants, fruit and seaweed.
The universe offers those to you as sustenance.

Some do and some don't. We do have to survive you know. The whole point of Wicca is making religion what you want it to be. It's more about respecting the right to believe what you want than it is about relying on a strict doctrine. It's about finding your own path to God. No two Wiccans believe the same thing in my opinion. Eating plants and animals doesn't make nature loving people hypocrites. Wiccans (along with other religions & philosophies) believe in co-existing with nature not starving yourself for it!
If you want to talk about hypocrites how can christians believe "thou shalt not kill" but yet believe in the same book that says "no christian shall suffer a witch to live". So, don't kill but, it's ok to kill some people? WTF! Or how about the fact that they see their God as jealous and vengeful; two traits that I know God doesn't and wouldn't have!

The only person I've ever known to actually regard plants as people was a fictitious (and idiotic bimbohead fluffy) character in that Blair Witch sequel.
Exactly what are we supposed to eat if we can't eat plants or animals? Sorry but I can't have stone soup. It's bad for my teeth.

I'm wiccan. Plants don't have a brain. So I eat them.
Trees are our friends - not plants. Plants are useful tools for every day life. We love and protect trees as sacred.

Logically speaking, plants aren't sentient beings, and witches, wiccans, shamans, pagans, etc. walk the Earth with respect and moderation, giving thanks for any sacrifices made by natural world as sustenance. They understand the interconnectedness but use common sense.

How can Catholics bear to eat blessed crackers and grape juice? Isn't it like eating their saviour? How can Christians bear to wear a cross? Isn't it like flaunting the execution of their leader? Etcetera and so on and blah blah...
