You're right to not want to be rude (so ignore the answers that urge you to do so).

You can't tell the person they're being a moron without being rude.

Since you don't give any details, it's hard to give you exact wording, but pleasant politeness is the thing to go for.

If it doesn't pacify or even embarrass them, at least it won't escalate their anger.

"I'm sorry you disagree with our policy (or whatever); but that's not up to me. If you want to complain to the manager, I'll get her."

With as good a smile as you can manage, and pleasant tone.

Or, "What is it you expect me to do?" (Again, as sweetly as you can.) Then patiently explain why you can't.

If this is a long-term job, you might want to read some Miss Manners books, and peruse her column (at the Washington Post, available on-line). She's masterful at figuring out ways to politely make others feel horrible for their rudeness.

Politeness can be much more devastating than rudeness. Rudeness usually makes the situation worse, and, since you're now in the wrong, your boss will remember your rudeness, and that you can't be trusted to be polite.

I agree w/ Peersignal (the first person to respond). You don't want to snap back at them, because then you are no better than they are. I think we've all had bad days where we treat someone poorly even though they didn't deserve it. If they get a manager, and the manager handles it the same way that you do (which, if you were doing it correctly, is what would most likely happen), then the customer will most likely realize that it's not your fault.

You dont have to say any come back.

You smile and when they something rude say - Okay then, and either keep on doing what you're doing for them. Or if its the end of conversation with them say - Is there anything else i can help you with?? If they say no, just say well you have a good day then.

Remember to patronizingly smile - so that they know you couldn't give a rats backside about what they're complaining about. But you didn't say anything rude - so can't get introuble.

When someones angry, seeing the person you just abused smile and not give a crap is far worse than anything that u could say to them.

good luck

I've had this happen to me a few times. The best thing to do is tell them that you are confident that you know exactly what you're doing. Just make sure not to let them see that it hurt you...it's something that kinda cuts deep, but at the same time, if you really know what you're doing, then don't let it bother you too much.

Does the guy asserting this actually understand you to make that declare? If not, this person isn't something extra advantageous than some troll attempting to get an improve from you. That or the guy is only only an asshole pretending to have turrets syndrome.

i worked part time in a shop to pay help me through college and was treated very badly. Called the worse names, threatened and once a customer told me "you are just a lowly shop assisstant. You're here to service me and I can talk to you how I want" I told him to go **** himself and that he was barred. My manager agreed with me! Generally though I just gave a patronising smile or said out right that there is no reason to be so rude, that my job isn't to take crap off strangers. Don't let customers treat you like crap

I work at Victoria's Secret and had the exact same thing happen to me after only a few weeks of working there.
Try something like this:
"Please, don't confuse this look on my face for speechlessness. It's just that I'm not use to having to speak to rude, people that only know how to make snide and petty remarks."

I don't know if it's any good, 'cause I often find myself at a loss for words at well...good luck, hon!!

Just send for a manager - they get paid enough to listen to this & the customer will feel like they are getting better attention.

This was not your fault and you shouldn't blame yourself

Next time, maybe you should tell the "customer" that they should leave the place and come back much later when they are feeling a bit calmer.

If they are angry at something that was not your fault... you simply don't take it personally. But, you are there to represent the company that you are working for. It helps to have well rehearsed dialog prepared for just the occasion and do your best to say it with all sincerity. "I am sorry to hear that this has happened to you. Our company values it's costomers and would take your concerns into consideration. If you would like for me to take your name and number, I would be glad to foward your greivence to somebody who could investigate this further for you. "
