i have thick long hair almost all the way down my back

Check out some of the websites below that offer tons of styles. Since I don't know how long your hair is or the style that is my best recommendation.
However, I do have to say loose waves or slightly pulled back looks better than corkscrews on most girls.

For prom my do was an up one but i found these little snap in things that had jewels on them at some bargain place for less then $5. My suggestion is go to your local Claires of Dollar shop and see if you can find something. No need to spend tons when you dont have to. Find something to put in your hair throughout it so that it sparkles.
My hair is semi wavy so it just looked adorable :)
Though with an updo i had a migraine the next day... *sighs* It was so worth it though.

The best thing to do would be to curl your hair and add diamond hair pins. You can get some from Wal-Mart, and they just look like little diamonds all over your hair. I love them. I wore them when I got married.
If your hair is too short to curl, you can still use the diamond hair pins and try to add some volume to your hair with hair products. Make sure they're not too oily though. You don't want your hair clumping or feeling greasy. Prom night is a wonderful night, and you want everything to go perfect.
