If the negative has legally passed the 7 year mark but remains on your reports, dispute it as obsolete.

If it is verified by the data furnisher (credit card company or collection agency) than you have a legal right to sue them, and the credit reporting agency, for violations.

The reporting SOL for a credit card starts on the first time you were 30 days late and never brought the account current leading to the charge off. NOT from the DOLA (date of last activity) and NOT from the charge off.

When looking to lend to someone most companies don't look back seven years. If you have a bankruptcy on your credit history is when the seven year number comes into play. If it is a small collection that hasn't been paid it can stay on your credit history until it is paid. If it was a credit card that you were late on a few times don't sweat it no one will pay any attention to it.
