First answer was good, but also think of more lighting. Basements are typically darkish. More light, less qualms.

If you want your own space & privacy, I think it would be a good idea. Plus you can fix it up however you like! What are you scared of down there?? You didn't say~so, you are going to have to figure out what it is that is bothering you about it, and then conqure your fear. Just remember it's probably nothing real or serious, and that everybody else is just up the stairs:) Maybe if you have a brother or sister, they, or a good friend could stay down there with you in your new room for the first few nights, then it won't be so different or scarey for you~
Good Luck!!

My teen aged girl felt the same way, but once we convinced her to move down stairs, she loved it.
She just kept the lights on for a couple of weeks so she could see there was nothing to be afraid of.
You can hang bells on the windows and doors if you are afraid of someone getting it. Also you can buy door alarms at Wal Mart for ten dollars for four of them. The stick on the doors and windows with ssticky tape, and if the door or window is opened the alarm shrieks like crazy. Try it, I*ll bet you will love it as much as my daughter did.

A basement is actually a really nice place. If it is unfinished,
you can always screen off a private area with shoji screens or
folding screens. Then add some nice plants, pillows, rugs, and create a really nice space fro yourself. Use your imagination, and don't be afraid. A nice floor lamp with a dimmer would help if the dark bothers you.
