Straight across bangs are best for long, narrow or oval faces because they add a strong horizontal line.

On other face shapes like square or round, straight bangs will make the face look squat.

Other things to consider:

1) hair texture - your hair may spring higher than you expect
2) cowlicks @ the hair line - need to compensate for them
3) your features - Which length is best for your nose? i.e. if you have a short nose, bangs that come to the bridge will make it look shorter, etc.

As for cutting straight bangs, do not just cut straight across. The thickness of the hair pieces will catch in the scissors differently and you will have uneven layers.

For really straight, geometrical bangs - go to a professional.

I'm a fan of bangs. I think you could do that, but maybe dry them how you are planning on wearing them first so that you don't accidentally cut them way too short. Have fun :)
