Bishop Gregory Aymond, head of the bishops' Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People, said he was encouraged by the decreasing numbers. There were 1,092 abuse claims in 2004, 783 the next year and 714 last year. Still, he called the findings "sobering."

Just wondering why Catholics are still protecting the Church by contributing money? When you give money to your Parish you DO SUPPORT CHILD ABUSE.

Shame on YOU!

OK. Just because you built a school or a hospital then... it is ok? It is NOT OK. You should be ashamed of yourself when you give them one penny of your money.

Paul... I am not a sheep that follows blindly. I gave up on organized religion of all faiths. Being a Catholic I could not support an organization that hid its pedophiles and sexual diviants under the cloak of religion. I quit. You my friend and all other members of organized religion ARE brain washed. Stop giving them money.

It's sad,how hard working people contribute their money to their church. Then their money goes towards paying attorneys for legal fees and paying victims lump sums, due to their churches pedophile priests.

Those are the abuse claims and do not reflect the number of abuses in 2005 and 2006. The claims made in 2005 and 2006 may only be claims and they might be claiming abuses in prior years.
The John Jay School of Criminal Justice did a study and said most abuses were in the 70s and 80s. Right after Vatican 2 the Church opened up to a lot of new ideas some were not so good. One was situation ethics which was being considered in some liberal Protestant theology. It caused a great deal of disagreement among priest. I believe this had a great deal to do with the problem.

The onset of pedophilia usually occurs during adolescence. Occasional pedophiles begin their activities during middle age but this late onset is uncommon. In the United States, about 50% of men arrested for pedophilia are married.

OTTAWA, Mar 30 (LSN) - A Statistics Canada release yesterday revealed that nearly a third of all 30,735 sex offences in Canada in 1997 were committed against children younger that twelve. When one includes the offences against children from 12-18 the proportion jumps to 62%.

Does Mrs. Pelosi truly support the National American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) or just proudly march in parades with them and receive 90 percent approval from their enablers in the American Civil Liberties Union? Inquiring minds surely want to know. [Washington Times, 10/12/06]

this is a depravity against our children and whilethe Rcc is getting most of the press -- we need to look at the bigger picture.

How about quoting some of the statistics on sex abuse by PROTESTANT clergy for a change? Statistics indicate that as many (if not more) Protestant clergy are guilty of sexually abusing women and children, but those figures are seldom mentioned.

The Church is an easy target for every person with an anti-Catholic bias to point fingers at, even while they ignore the fact that a lot of their own ministers have committed the same crimes. So is giving money to the Methodist or Presbyterians supporting child abuse?

Shame on YOU for supporting those nasty Protestant pedophiles and rapists.

and what of the protestant denomination pastors who demand ten percent of everyones wages and are guilty of the same thing. it is still a large number within the church but the church is still trying to rectify the problem. what about all the catholic missionaries and money for various charities around the world,no other group/community offers the relief and aid that the catholic church does, this doesn't make the problem acceptable,it isn't acceptable but the church is doing what it can. in todays society child molestation is a very serious problem, just watch nbc's show to catch a predator amongst other sources. why concentrate on the catholic church when the problem is amongst religous and non religous alike.

harry if you are going to give up on organized religion over a flaw you may aswell give up on society and you may aswell stop giving money to your government for all the flaws.

My friend was raped by a instructor at our Catholic school when she was 12 years old. That was in 1997 and the school shelved prior complaints of improper handling of female students.

Sobering, huh? Hierarchy and unquestionable authority leads to abuse of vulnerable groups, in this case children.

That doesn't mean contemporary donations support child abuse, but they do prop up a system where abuse is likely to occur.

Note: I am speaking of all religions here, not simply Catholicism. The same abuse cases ring true in the Tibetan monastic tradition and Prostestant groups.

Really! And do we support child abuse when we contribute to the Boy Scouts? Or to school fundraisers? Cases involving scout leaders are just as numerous as cases involving priests. They just don't get the national press. And cases involving teachers and coaches FAR outnumber those involving priests. Come to think of it, we really can't support anything without supporting child abuse, since the incidence of such crimes among priests is just about the same as the incidence in any cross-section of men you choose. You have been brainwashed by the secular press. But you seem to enjoy it.

Duh...the cases did not happen in 2006 and 2005 - they were brought to light in those years.

And the majority of priests are not molestors. The ones who are - lock em up, and the ones who protected them. But stop acting like it's every priest, every church, etc. It isn't even close.
