who build huge mansions in resort areas have raised the property values so much that those who are working in the emergency services (fire, ambulance, etc) can no longer live in the area so the response time for those services is half an hour or more. And of course those same rich people do not want to pay to have permanent employees.

I have a home in the Keys and we are going through the same problem right now. Teachers and firemen can not afford to live in the area so we must provide transportation to and from Homestead. But you are wrong in assuming that this is because of the very rich, we are at best affluent and no one in our neighborhood would describe themselves as very rich. What the real question is or should be is why do we not pay our firemen and teachers enough money to buy adequate housing?

You are right it is funny. My friend teaches at a high school and the students all drive better rides then his. He is amused, often.
