I would start my own charity geared for alternative treatments for Autism.

Noted atheist Bill Gates is a great example of how donations to charities should be handled--by adopting the "hands on" approach he ensures most of the money he gives is not absorbed into "administration costs"--as seems to be the case with most faith based charities.

Warchild. An organisation that supports children that have become the victims of useless wars. It's sad to live on a planet where such organisations are actually still needed.
Btw, for a lousy 8 billion dollars (around 1% of what is spent on useless wars) we can make sure that the entire world population has clean drinking water, which will save a lot of lives. So, if you only get 8,000 answers, we can save the planet!

Charity Newsies. It's a local charity that provides clothing, shoes and winter coats to children who are without. 100% of your donation goes to the kids. I'd give three-quarters there and the rest to the Salvation Army. Yeah yeah, I know it's a christian-based organization, but I've seen the good work they do and I support them.

Holy fawk. If I had a million dollars to give to charity I would go absolutely nuts. I'd probably pick quick a few...and if I had that much money to give, I'd probably afford to help through humanitarian work, and that would just be beyond awesome.

I would definitely pick several. ASPCA is top on my list. There are many others I would like to donate to. And, I'd probably save some to donate to schools in the low-income district, so they could actually have decent learning materials.
*Sheesh....what is with me and not reading questions...not an Atheist...ooops.

You're probably not gonna do Hindus so I guess I'll have to answer here...
I would give to the following animal charities:
HSUS, Best Friends Sanctuary, The Elephant Sanctuary, NOrtheast Animal Shelter, my local no-kill shelter. I would also give to HAF (Hindu-American Foundation) and then I would use more money to buy a Hindu temple for my state because we don't have one!!

Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation. They do an excellent job at distributing money to the best charities, actually.

Screw charities. It's hard to find one that would put the full amount toward their operations. I'd rather see to it myself that my donated money goes toward schools, food, education, healthcare, etc. in countries that need it. I'd be willing to take the time out of my life seeing over it. No credit for the work needed.
Heck, I'll use that to start my own charity that puts 100% of profits toward operations.

I'd donate it to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.
