"They" say that an average sized person should drink at least ten 8-ounce glasses of water a day. This is just to replace what you use and loose through the normal "wear and tear" that the body voids (sweat, tears, urine etc.) over a normal day. If you live a more active lifestyle, with workouts or sports, or are obese, you might want to drink a little more. (an extra 8-ounces for ever 25 lbs over 160 lbs.)
What it does for you is prevents dehydration by keeping a certain volume of fluid in your veins, arterys, and cells.
(The death was due to something called "Water Intoxication" that is not common in headlines anymore, but a few years ago it is what all those kids at the raves kept suffering from... that and the bathtub drugs they were taking.)

This is off topic of your question, but I was surprised to hear about that woman that drank too much water and died just to win a PSP in a contest. She basically poisoned herself and couldn't absorb all the gallons she took in.

first of all, you must be knowing that excess of everything is bad, so try to have water intake moderately as well...
There is water also in most of the foods we eat in our daily lives..
One of the advantages, i know of water is that it helps you to maintain your weight.. Also, It flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion.
and ofcourse it also helps in getting rid of all the bad stuff inside your body with the water flow out of your body.
