I'm visiting melbourne, aust. for at least 4 weeks, I am sure I'm going to fall in love with it and want to stay longer especially since i'm going to visit my best guy friend. I've cked out the visa sites and it says that an ETA is basically a visa but there is no stamp. But the prices for purchasing either one are different. The ETA says can stay up to 3 months at a time w/ability to go in and out over 12 month period. But the Tourist visa which is more expensive doesnt really say how long i can stay at a time. Also it makes it seem like I would be able to add on additional months should i decided to stay longer. Is that true? or should I just go for the cheaper one?

If you are only going to be in Australia for 4 weeks, use the ETA. They are free (unless your travel agent charges you a fee for getting it for you. You can get one online, I have been told. You still need a passport. The tourist visa allows one to stay longer than 3 months, but it is pricey. If my memory is correct, the tourist visa is good for two years, but does not allow you to work. they are the same thing.
Electronic Tourism Application
only certain countries are eligible for ETA. security reasons.
there are three types of tourist visa, (non electronic)
being 3 month, 6 month, or 12.
they are not valid for multiple entry, but you can extend your stay to a maximum of 12 months (if you have 3 or 6) provided you can show adequate funds and a valid return flight.
make sure your passport is valid to at least six months after your departure, and have a great holiday!
