Why not? Would you have by-pass surgery done by a doctor who has a good heart? Or a haircut from a bald barber?

OK...this is tricky! I think there is a difference between an artist who can tattoo and a tattoo artist. Make sense?
I believe that people who are "into" the art of tattooing... would be a person who has plenty of tattoos themselves. However, I do not think that this dictates whether the person WOULD be able to draw them or not...this is a totally different thing.
Tattooing is an art.
It is not the only art form out there.
On the other hand...if I was going to get a tattoo from a tattoo artist...I would look for them to have a tattoo, from a personal perspective, because this would give an indication to me that they were dedicated to their art.
A tattoo artist without a tattoo, is for me, like a painter who does not own any works of art.

if an artist has an impressive portfolio and i had seen previous work with my own eyes then i would have no problem getting a tattoo from someone with no tattoos. however that is a very rare thing.
but a lot of tattoo artists do tattoo themselves. mine has done quite a few on his legs. he was going to try to tattoo his own feet but he couldn't reach all places well enough so decided not to.
also there was this lady who tattooed in the early 1900s. her dad was a famous tattoo artist and he taught her how to tattoo. she was a professional tattooer at the age of 9!! her dad never let her get a tattoo, so in her almost 70 year tattoo career she never got a tattoo.

Really good question and some good answers. When I was in this past weekend getting work done, my artist was talking about another artist he knew who never had tattoos of his own for years. When he finally got one 2 artists were working on him at the same time. (We were talking about pain tolerance). So along those lines, I guess it wouldn't matter to me, except for the fact that the artist knows what it feels like and maybe has a lighter hand? I only say that because mine was talking about the different areas he has had done and what the pain was like in those areas for him.

A tattoo artist without tattoos on their body..uhhhh I didnt think that was possible.
Tatt artists generally would have a real passion for art on skin so I cant imagine why they wouldnt get tattoos themselves.
Anyways, I dont think id get a tatt from an artist without tatts..

You lnow it would depend if I have seen there work then maybe it would have to be pretty awesome though. I also think there is a down side because if they have never had a tattoo then they won't know how it feels when the tattoo is being down. they won't know when they are pushing to hard or not hard enough.... but if there are a great artist then yes I would...

I might, I might not, but I do know of a few truly great artist that don't have tattoos themselves but do amazing work. You can't really judge a book by its cover anyway, so look at the work they do, not the work on them

I wouldn't care if the tattoo artist has a tattoo or not... but I would definitely ask around / check references what the place is like... you don't want some 'butcher' to 'practice' on you... ;)

That wouldn't even come into consideration for me. If the artists portfolio rocks and I've seen his work beforehand....then who cares if he has ink or not. I want to get a tattoo from him...not marry him. So I could careless if he has ink, if he hates cats, if he doesn't drive, if he only eats baby animals..... As long as his art works for me.....then the rest is irrelevant.
PS Your Sister co-workers suck for putting pressure on her. I think she should tell them to get fu*ked.

i may be a lil abrehensive because most tattoo artists are pretty well covered in tats but that wouldnt stop me from gettin one from him or her as long as i saw pictures of their work & stuff. they could just be a really good artist that enjoys tattooing people. they may have a low tolerance for pain & are scared to get it themself. there are plenty of reasons that seem like they may not make sense but thats life. lol. i HATE needles yet i like piercings & have a tattoo....

Yes. But before I got any of my tattoos, I looked at samples of my artists work, both in pictures, and on real people.
