1234, from O.Fr. cuntree, from V.L. *(terra) contrata "(land) lying opposite," or "(land) spread before one," from L. contra "opposite." To Eng. as "district," narrowed 1526 to rural areas, as opposed to cities. Replaced O.E. land. First record of countryside is 1621. Countrified is from 1653. First record of country-and-western music style is from 1959. Country club first recorded 1894.

Typically, it's an independent political entity with no others asserting a controlling authority. For instance, nobody effectively claims to make or enforce laws that supercede or cancel those of the French Parliament; therefore, France is a country.

There are some fuzzy divisions, depending on history. For instance, the UK makes general laws and policies over England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, but allows each of the four constituent units (formerly separate countries) a certain degree of independent legislative power. Some consider them four countires in a higher-level union. Other entities in the "gray area" include the former USSR, United Arab Emirates, the European Union, and the United States.
