I'm going to Australia for the first time to visit and stay with my best guy friend and his parents. They are letting me stay with them for at least a month. I would really like to give them something as a hello/ thank you. Is there something specific as to Australian culture? also they are Russian, so maybe something specific to Russian culture? Thanks everyone for your help I really want them to see how greatful I am.

Ask your best guy friend. He should know them better than anyone and be able to make a suggestion. They may not drink, or eat sweets. They may even be insulted by a gift.
You may want to wait until you are there and see their home and learn what they are like. Then shopping you could pick up something that would fit their decor and give it to them when you leave with a note of thanks. Maybe leave it in the room for them to find after you are gone.

I would say bring them something from YOUR area rather than something Russian or Australian. Are you in the U.S.? Sometimes we find it hard to find things made in the U.S. but it can be done. A nice candy dish made in the U.S. and some good U.S. chocolate make a nice gift. There is a big variety of prices too on candy dishes and candy, so you should be able to find something in the price range you want.

I really don't think that they expect a gift. I would focus on being the very best and grateful guest they ever had in their home.
I would keep my room immaculate, help with the chores you know how to do.....wash the dishes after dinner.....ect.
Also if you are near a town....an invite to dinner twice for the month you are staying. Insist on paying.
And of course a hand written Thank you card after you have left.

I would show my appreciation by "doing". Once you get there, chip in and lend a helping hand in the housework, cooking, cleaning, and even wait on them hand and foot. When I traveled abroad, I did exactly this... the family loved it and now they love me. I was thankful for a place to stay and in turn I showed them my hospitality by doing damn near everything for them. They even joked about having an American maid for three weeks. I enjoyed it as much as they did.

a nice bottle of wine or a good qulaity vodka would be a nice get to know you gift, check with your friend and if he says they dont drink, a nice house plant or an offer of dinner wouldn't hurt, either-- have a great trip
