Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray the bottom and sides of a baking pan thoroughly with cooking spray. Place the stick of butter in a microwave safe container and heat for 30 to 45 seconds on medium-high heat, or until melted. Step 2 Combine cake mix, melted butter, brown sugar, egg and water in a large mixing bowl. Mix it using electric beaters for 1 to 2 minutes, or until thick and creamy. The mixture should now resemble a thick cake or brownie batter. Step 3 Mix nuts and chocolate chips into the batter using a large spoon. Transfer batter to the greased baking pan using the large spoon. The batter should be too thick to pour without using a utensil. Press the batter into the pan firmly using the back of the spoon. Step 4 Put the pan in the warm oven and bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until a dry crust forms over the top of the brownies. Remove the pan from the oven and allow the brownies to cool completely. Place it on a cooling rack, if desired, to speed cooling. Step 5 Cut the brownies into 2- or 3-inch bars and serve. Refrigerate any unused portion immediately. Cake mix brownies will keep in the refrigerator for approximately 3 to 5 days.

I do it all the time.
1 cake mix, 1 stick of softened butter, 1 egg.
Mix well and drop by teaspoon on ungreased cookie sheet (you can lightly grease it if you are worried about sticking). Works really well with the lemon, coconut, and butter pecan cake mixes.
