We have a portable dvd player (that only worked for a short while) and I have bought all kinds of singing tapes. But, they both scream and tell me they want all. It is never peaceful in the car. My mom lives almost two hours away and I try to visit her at least every other week. Anyone have an idea on making the ride more pleasant.

give lots of snacks to them and juice. also give them their favorite toys to play with on the way. my son grew out of whining in the car when he was almost 3 so eventually it will get better.

The portable DVD is a good idea. But try to take other things along the ride. Kids seem to have a very short attention spam. Take some paper and pencil so they can draw. Try to take them toys they really seem to like. Good luck!!!

Special "car trip toys" that they only get on car trips.
Special snacks & drinks, even special "car cups", again only given on those long car rides.
Sing *with* them, *to* them, they'd probably rather hear your voice than a tape.
Play counting games, naming games, ABC games, anything you can think of.
Stop often, or drive during normal sleep/nap times for fewer stops with sleeping kiddos.
Frisbees make great pretend steering wheels. Until they decide to throw them, at least. ;)

How about timing your driving to their sleep times?

Get them ready for bed and put them in their carseats and drive at night or get up early in the morning and transfer them still sleeping to the vehicle and hope they don't wake up.

Do they still nap during the day? You could try the same thing around their naptimes.

If nothing else works buy earplugs ;-)

I give my baby a baggie of crackers on car trips. That seems to make her happy. When we are driving a long way, we try to leave when she is sleepy so she will sleep most of the way.

what you should do is let them run around for a while before you leave. so that way they'll hopefully sleep while you drive. leave early in the morning before its their wake up time. take some of their fave. toys. something to snack on something to drink. let them help you get ready to leave so that way they'll be excited to get their stuff. and you can also take about a 20 min break and let them run around in a nearby park.

Keep them awake before the trip so they sleep, or go in the middle of the night.

give them a book. they might not know how to read it, but it will keep them entertained.
ask them questions about the pictures, like the colors they see, what the picture is about, and even about their favorite characters and such.
