Sometimes, but not lways.

Puppies can become infected with hookworms and roundworms while they are still in the mother's uterus. The larvae (immature forms) of the worms migrate through the mother's uterus and into the developing fetus. Puppies and kittens can also be infected with roundworms and hookworms through their mother's milk. This is why it is so important to begin a deworming program when the puppies and kittens are 2 weeks old.

NO!!!!!! But many do have them passed from their mother. One type of worm encysts in the mother and can't be gotten rid of with worming medication at that point in time. Partway through the pregnancy, the worms finish their cycle and infect the puppies. Most vets worm for the most common worms no matter what since we don't see many puppies without some type of internal parasite.

All puppies are not born with worms, but they quickly get them from the mother's milk. Pups should be treated as a precaution.

I can't believe how many people don't know the answer to this!

There is no reason for a puppy to be born with worms. Yes, they can catch them from their mother but - YOU CAN WORM PREGNANT AND LACTATING B ITCHES! Get a proper SAFE wormer from a veterinary surgery - like Panacur suspension, and worming a pregnant or lactating b itch will treat her puppies too. You can worm young puppies, but if they're nursing there's no point unless you're worming the mother too. Worms/dewormer/everything in her passes through her milk to the pups.

I repeat: puppies do not have to be born with worms! Sorry to yell!

Puppy's are not born with worms, but if the mother has worms the puppy's will injest worm larva the first time the nurse. Thus the apperence of being born with them. This is also why you may be waisting your time de-worming the puppy's if they are still nursing.

If mommy does not have worms, the puppy's won't get worms.

Yes, worms are passed to the pups from the mother. It is best to start worming pups at 2 weeks and every week after until about 6-8 weeks. For those that say no, they are wrong. We once lost a 4 wk old pup to worms. The mother was worm free, we worm them before they are bred, before pups are born and after pups are born. This article explains how pups get worms from the mother.

The most common type of worm to be found in dogs (and also in foxes) is the round worm which goes by the name of Toxocara Canis. It is quite long and looks a bit like spaghetti. The adult worm sheds hundreds of eggs in the animal's gut, eggs so tiny they can only be seen under a microscope, these are passed out of the body and into the ground in the dog’s poo.

In mature dogs the worm doesn’t usually reach the adult stage. The eggs hatch out into immature larvae and, instead of growing, hundreds of these tiny larvae dig through the gut wall and make their way into muscles throughout the body where they form cysts. There they wait for the opportune moment to come. There is no medicine that can penetrate the walls of these cysts so there is no way to get rid of them.

The larvae remain dormant until the ***** becomes pregnant when the change in hormones triggers them to wake up. Then its "Yippeeeee! A new home!" and off they race into the bitches womb and milk glands. As the forming pups develop they will be swallowing the amniotic fluid in the womb and with it the worm larvae. The larvae can also pass down the umbilical chord. So you see the puppy is already infested with worms before it is born, and these worms are shedding more eggs.

Yes. All puppies are born with roundworms even if there are no worms present in the mother's stool and she has been dewormed. This is because all dogs carry dormant worm larvae encysted in the tissue of their intestines. Pregnancy activates the dormant larvae and they migrate to the unborn puppies. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2-3 weeks of age. Some puppies have more than one type of worms.
