Caffeine is naturally bitter. And coffee contains more caffeine than tea (equal size servings of course). So it takes more sugar to mask the caffeine bitterness.

Just an observation as I don't drink coffee.

Depends how strong your coffee or tea is.

I don't like either beverage strong. After picking up a cup at a coffee house, sometimes need to pour a few inches of the coffee out and replace with water before I find it drinkable.

Coffee is more bitter. Bitter taste is much more stronger than any other taste, if you ask me. Try sweeteners instead of processed sugar b.c it disolves much faster than regular sugars.

because coffee has a stronger flavor than tea... so you need more to overcome the coffee's bitterness.

it doesn't if you use splenda & it does not have an after taste
