stock market value is 0.09c per share

If you sell the stock you can then take the loss,, but you have not realized a loss until you sell the stock. You stock may be on pink sheets and not show up on regular stock quotes,, would have a 'pk' or '.pk' behind symbol.

Stocks come back from near death,, look at fmxi.pk ,, got down to 3 cents,, back over $5.00 a few days ago

If it still has 9 cents per share value, then it's not worthless - it's worth 9 cents a share, not much and maybe a huge loss for you, but not worthless. If it still has value, to take the loss you have to sell it. If it has NO value, say the company has dissolved in bankrupcy, then you could take it as worthless.
