Yes. it is. Overdosing of propylene glycol can kill a dog, human or any other mammal.

It can very certainly damaged kidneys, liver and other important organs beyond any hope of repair.

As a rule, dogfoods that use these types of chemicals are at the very bottom rung of nutritional value. These are foods manufacturered for the "Waste to Profit", industry and contain many other elements that are ALSO not good for your dog.

These types of commercial kibbles should be avoided at all costs. They are harmful to your pet and a waste of your money.

ALways read the label before purchasing commercial kibbles and other dog foods. A good dog food has meat as the first ingredient, and usually doesn't contain any, or much grain, and certainly no caustic chemicals like the one you mentioned..

A healthy rule of thumb is that; "if you wouldn't eat it yourself - don't feed it to your pets"!

Here's an excellent link outlining many of the contents of dog foods.

Please don't give anything with propylene glycol in it to you dog!

Best of luck.

Propylene glycol is toxic to dogs, but not quite as toxic as ethylene glycol. I can't imagine what the value of propylene glycol would be in dog food. I'd steer clear of any food that contains it.

Here is some info:
Antifreeze products containing ethylene glycol are highly toxic, and can produce life-threatening kidney damage in pets, even in small amounts. Most cases of antifreeze poisoning occur around the pet’s home and are usually due to improper storage or disposal, so it’s important that you take the following precautions:
- Always clean up antifreeze spills immediately.
- Store antifreeze in clearly marked, sealed containers, in areas that are inaccessible to your pets.
- Consider switching to antifreeze products that contain propylene glycol, which are relatively less toxic and provide an extra margin of safety for pets and wildlife.
- Be alert for leaks and spills from neighborhood vehicles when taking your pet on walks during the winter months.

It's ETHYLENE glycol that is used in antifreeze, and that is extremely toxic to dogs and cats.

I got this bit of info from Wikipedia which I think pretty much explains the situation:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined propylene glycol to be "generally recognized as safe" for use in food, cosmetics, and medicines. Like ethylene glycol, propylene glycol affects the body's chemistry by increasing the amount of acid. Propylene glycol is metabolized into lactic acid, which occurs naturally as muscles are exercised, while ethylene glycol is metabolized into oxalic acid, which is toxic.

So no, it's safe.

But if you don't like the sound of it, just don't buy the dogfoods with that listed in the ingredients.

It can be used as antifreeze. It isn't toxic like Ethylene glycol, which is also used as antifreeze. Polyethylene glycol is used in people as a mild laxative.

If it is used in antifreeze it is definitely not good for dogs!

I know it's in antifreeze, and that kills dogs, I didn't know it was used in dog food though.

I don't know if it's TOXIC, but it's a preservative and it can't be good for them!
