It's a very nice location, it's in walking distance of the F train, 1 train, V train, A train and C train. It is near a row of shops between 5th and 6th avenue on 23rd street like Home Depot, Best Buy and PC Richards. For dining, if you want great Polish food, you could venture to Veselka's on 9th street and 2nd avenue. For other food, I suggest going down to Union Square which is between 17th and 14th street right below Broadway. Right off 14th street by Union Square is Max Brenner's Chocolate by the Bald Man, a world renowned yet still affordable chocolate shop. Or you could check out the Union Square Cafe, a famous cafe established by Danny Meyer (it was rated the most popular restaurant in the city by Zagats, Danny Meyer is famous for establishing the Gramercy Tavern) on 16th street right off Union Square. Lastly, for the most uber-chic shopping in the world, I would suggest taking the F train to Broadway-Lafayette (it'll take you 15 minutes maximum) and walking down Broadway below Houston street. You will find yourself in SoHo, home to some of the most expensive and chic stores in the United States. In SoHo you could check out everything from American Apparel stores, to H & M, to Uni Qlo, to D & G ( 434 West Broadway), to Express, to Prada ( 575 Broadway), to Marc Jacobs (163 Mercer St), to Classic Kicks (above Houston on Elizabeth street) and more. And lastly, the place where you are staying places you near Chelsea Piers (just walk straight West until you get to the water, you can't miss it), which has an ice skating rink, a driving range and numerous fields. Congratulations, you picked one of the safest and most convenient neighborhoods in NYC.

It is pretty safe neighborhood, but be aware of your surroundings, and you probably shouldnt give out your personal information.
It's in Chelsea so there are tons of fun galleries nearby, there are a few good restaurants, and some reliable diners. If you feel like playing some kind of sport, knocking out a bucket, skating, etc. you should head over to chelsea piers on 23rd and the West Side Highway.
New York is an interesting place and I'm sure you'll find something no matter where you are.

Chelsea is today a upscale neighborhood. Right around the block on 23rd Street, there is the world famous Chelsea Hotel that was home of many celebrities. Guitarist Jim Hendrix stayed there, Welsh poet Dylan Thomas stayed there, punk rocker Sid Vicious was found dead there. That's only a few of many famous people who stayed at the Chelsea. Just drop in and I'm sure they will give you plenty of extraordinary historical facts about Chelsea.

nice location in the heart of chelsea , many galleries nearby.
for breakfast there is a typical ny greek diner on 9th ave and 23 st, go to the one on the se corner NOT the moon one. on the sw corner.
for desert there is billy's cupcakes just down the block towards 22st, one of my favorites places.
if you're around saturday take a walk over to union square 14 - 17 st off bdwy, there is a very nice green market there and you may see some interesting street theater
Enjoy your visit to the best city in the universe :)

every and any neighborhood in NYC is open to crime, you need to always be aware of your suuroundings...
in any event yes thats a "safe" area, it could be the meatpacking district where all the clubs are, but not sure
anything downtown is trendy
