Soo, I just used TurboTax for the very first time.(I use to have my father just do it for me because he's good with that stuff, but i figured I'd do it on my own this year)

I finished up and Efiled. I got an email the next day talking about how the IRS rejected my return.
The rejection was due because someone has filed me as their dependant, whether that be my mother or father.

Now.. I'm going to make up ###'s.. but, anyway.. I was going to get back 1400.

After I got the rejection email, I went back to turbo tax and edited out what they wanted me to edit out. There was an option for, "If you know you could be claimed as a dependant, check this".. Which I did because I am assuming this is what the problem is.. My return went from 1400 to 500. Why?

What the..?

Soo, I filed the normal way with the option unchecked to see what would happened because I want that money.
What should I do about this?

Thanks in advance..

Dominick

If your parents claim you as a dependent there are a number of exemptions and deductions you will not be eligible for. You parents will, however get additional deductions by claiming you. They may have counted on that. It sounds like you need to discuss tax strategy with them.

When you checked that you can be claimed as a dependent, then you didn't get an exemption for yourself, so the result would be that you'd owe taxes on an additional $3300 of your income - so since you owe more tax, your refund goes down.

If you filed again with the option unchecked that you can be claimed as a dependent, it will reject again.

The only way you'll get the money is if you can prove that your parents do not have the right to claim you - then you'd get your exemption, and your parents would be paying back some extra taxes.

Whether or not they can claim you depends on whether you live with them, your age, your income, whether or not you're a student, and a few other things - you don't give enough info here for anyone to tell whether they can claim you or not. Repost with that info and somebody can probably help you more.

First, you should check with your parents, and see if one of them claimed you as a dependent. If they did, then you need to file your tax return accordingly. If they didn't claim you as a dependent, then you need to call the IRS and see who did. If you are not in college, then your parents shouldn't be claiming you as a dependent. If they are, then you should tell them not to from now on.

The reason your refund is lower, is because you cannot claim yourself on the tax return, because somebody else already did. This means you don't get a $3300 deduction, so now you are being taxed on that $3300.00, and their may be more deductions that you are not eligible to take.

If someone else claimed you as a dependent, you will not get to take the personal exemption for yourself.

You will only get back your withholding amount.
