that is why we need to choose to change and repent now while we are living, because at some point, it WILL be too late!

I agree with you. Your example is certainly not fair to anyone. There are so many things in life that are not fair. It is my experience that when a person gets a damaged brain from an explosion or a hard impact on the head, all the bad addictions that person had in normal life are still there, but the persons ability of function normally is impaired.
Why did God make it this way? Why not make the brain stronger and better when one gets hurt? Why with a few falls during childhood did we human not learn just how dangerous it was to bang your head? Why did god not make learning with experience a principle of survival in the most important concepts of reality for humans?
My point is that why didn't God make it a rule that people would by the time they were ten years old, fully understand like instinctively that war and even things like greed will return to you and harm you just like anyone harming anyone else will suffer the consequences?
If I were God, this would be more important and stronger than an instinct like jealousness or even hungry.
Your question kind of answers its self in this regard. Repenting is much less necessary than learning how to live. Repentance is important, but it is even more important to not do things that need repenting.
Good question.

Fair or not is beside the point. We need to live our lives in such a way that we are always ready so that a sudden death will be a non-issue. Do not procrastinate the day of your repentance but prepare yourself now while you can to live righteously, loving and serving God by loving and serving your fellow beings.

Once a person (such as my father) denies Christ up and to their deathbed, it is a far cry for them to change their minds. Hardness of heart does not happen all at once. It is gradual.

Now is the time for salvation, because you do not know whether your move into eternity will be fast or slow. Even then, what condition will your heart be?

God is merciful. We do not know what a person is able to do in a case like that. However, as a Catholic, we are taught that the sins of presumption and despair are the two that can dam you. A person who feels they can wait until they are ready to die before the repent is guilty of presumption.

That is why choice needs to be made today. It is a gift to be given the exact time of death and a curse. It is more freeing to know every day I wake up or go to bed that I will go to be with the Lord. Make your election sure.

There's no need to repent (whoever does is achieving nothing). People die all the time, so do other animals, but we don't "pray" for the grass when we behead it with a mower, do we?

That's life. And, while you may not have time to repent in your very last moment. . .you had your whole life.

Life, I'm afraid to tell you, is just not fair...or the 30.000 children that are starving every given day, would have deserved to die...
