They keep saying "the bible has a lot of followers -- so it must be right"...

For many years, decades, even Centuries, slavery had a lot of supporters, and it turned out to be wrong. But that's another story entirely...

Factually -- the bible was scribbled out, and the books of the bible, contextually, are only a guess -- many books are in bits and pieces and over half of the words in the books are extrapolated -- guesswork. Because they have always been missing from the old parchments...

It's 2000 years later, and still, over 70% of the people on earth reject the bible. That's a pretty bad track record for something, if it was actually inspired by a god. For that simple reason, my conclusion would be that it's wrong, and certainly not inspired by a god or the "word of" a god...

Your thoughts?

sorry David M -- but I don't make the egotistical claim to "know" a god or any other cult/myth character. i don't pretend things like that to validate a thought or a belief...it is so beyond ridiculous to carry such a delusion that I don't know where to begin the discussion about validating delusions to, in turn, validate a belief. but no, I will not add to that the notion that one must possess that delusion of knowing a god to understand something written in a book. any college religion course taught by a degreed theologian would also laugh you out of the room for making that same type of claim/cop-out... that is a really grasping, unintelligent defense of a cult book -- to say that you must be possessed by a god, or "know" a god, before you can understand what that god wrote or inspired. it's very, very unintelligent. and actually, it weakens your argument.

Lee F said "and you forgot to mention which Bible, as there are many, You didn't know that, did you?"

yes, actually, I know that there are over a hundred different variations, interpretations, and editions of the bible. the KJV, the Douay Reims, Living, New American Standard, Luther, New KJV, the Wycliffe, the New World, the Prophets --- OH the list goes on and on. And each one claims to be the true, accurate representationof the word of God. And, if THAT ALONE doesn't tell you how ridiculous, and universally minsunderstood it is, than you need help. But thanks for pointing out that fact -- it actually strengthened my argument.

Lee F also said: "The books are like a manual to life, written in parables, so that you can correlate it as well as possible to fit a situation."

translate that to mean -- you can twist it to ft your argument, you can use it to hate whichever sub-population you wish at any given time (like gay people) by telling people "those laws have to be taken literally TODAY" while, at the same time, ignoring the REAMS of anti-female scripture, telling us that THOSE are outdated, contextually interpreted, and only meant for a specific population of women at a specific biblical time in a specific region of the world. BUT, that gay stuff, it's menat to be literal (they way I interpret it) and meant for EVERYONE and meant for TODAY.

i don't know how some of you can look at yourself in the mirror, with that depth of hypocrisy, double-speak, and hatred for people.

The bible can never really be a validated document of truth, because the contents regarding scripture are stories handed down hundreds of years after the death of Jesus, and there is no factual evidence that scripture was ever inspired by God, but there is one fact that is documented in every religious denomination in the world today, and that is "GREED" inspired by man,and his need for wealth, power, and control, and all of this is done in the name of God,. and this is why so many religions leaders are able to brainwash their followers into believing the bible to be factual and true when the leaders themselves know that the bible holds little water when it comes down to facts.

I think you don't understand the Bible, not a word of it. The book probably confuses you. Do you know when you write something down it doesn't go away. Your ignorance will be on Yahoo Answers for a long time. Your statistics are incorrect and you forgot to mention which Bible, as there are many, You didn't know that, did you?
The books are like a manual to life, written in parables, so that you can correlate it as well as possible to fit a situation. The King James version remains one of the leading sellers.
I don't know why I answered this question, it is one of the most aggravating ones yet because it is full of misinformation.
It is important to be Christ Like not so much a Christian, Religion is an institution, I would rather stay away from. You have made me feel unworthy. If that was your mission, you got me. Now I have to tend to my garden, as it needs a bit of weeding.
God bless us all...
P.S. You have a mean streak. Your additional comments sound so overly officious. Man, what are you talking about? You have twisted everything I wrote. Where does gay come from. You seem to be a racist as well.
God bless us all...

Hi Phyllis. I would first like to begin by saying that I am not religious, but spiritual; there is a difference. I do have a very personal relationship with my Savior, Jesus and the base of this relationship does not completely depend on the bible but mostly on prayer , love, conviction, unction, trust and faith. I have learned that when God speaks and I listen my life sails much more smoothly then when I trot off and do my own thing, that is when the fecal matter usually hits the wind production device. I am not His most perfect follower but follow Him I do. I would not be here if it were not for the great love of having this relationship. I must also say that I know that the bible is missing a great deal of works that King James (who was a drunk and an idiot, litteraly) did not want put in his verson of the bible. He did this because he could not understand most of what was there and some he just did not like so he had it removed, that is where the Apocrypha came from (really interesting books by the way). Not all Christians are alike and I don't have to have them as friends because; God tells us that we HAVE to love the soul of man (because that is the part of Him that exsist in all of us) But we do not have to like the actions of the person because that is the part of man that is flesh. He says pray for your enemy He does not tell us to take them on our next camping trip. Saving people is God's job but a lot of Christians are trying to become the new CEO and take His position and that is sad, sad, sad. I just needed to voice myself I guess and I am not even sure if I answered the question, but thanks for pricking that part of my brain today. LP

I validate the bible as inspired by God because of the following reasons:

Premise: Every event has a cause
Premise: The universe has a beginning
Premise: All beginnings involve an event

Inference: This implies that the beginning of the universe involved an event
Inference: Therefore the beginning of the universe had a cause
Conclusion: The universe had a cause

For something to have caused the universe it must have existed outside of the universe and time. That First Cause could only have been an omnipotent supernatural agent, God.

Thus once I conclude logically that a designer, first cause, or higher moral authority exists, I must then look to evidence of this designer's will. After investigating, the bible appears to me to be the most reliable revelation of this Supreme Being. You can review the two links below for discussion about the reliability of the bible.

Accuracy of bible:
http://www.carm.org/questions/trustbible.htm
http://www.carm.org/demo2/bible/reliable.htm

While all of my questions will never be definitively answered, I find that rationally my belief is on solid ground. There are many things in the world we do not fully understand or “see”, yet we have no problems in believing them. For example, solar physics is not fully known, yet we all objectively accept, using faith and scientific discourse, the "fact" that the sun will rise tomorrow.

Why is it we can believe in many things using rational analysis, even when what we believe is only partially known, yet when it comes to matters like a supreme being, we suddenly want the "show me beyond a shadow of doubt" proof? As Aristotle once stated, "It is the mark of an instructed mind to rest satisfied with the degree of precision which the nature of the subject admits, and not to seek exactness when only an approximation of the truth is possible."

Persons that seek absolute proof of something are inconsistently applying logic and rationality, for they do not seek this absoluteness in all things. Hence, their epistemologies are not fully formed; they speak without proper understanding of the nature of knowledge.

I am a Christian rationalist of the order of Augustine and Calvin. My rational system does not exalt the human mind as autonomous; instead, it affirms Biblical revelation as axiomatic. Divine revelation of Holy Scripture is a rational revelation. This revelation is internally self-consistent, non-contradictory, and non-paradoxical. A rational Christian reasons from revelation, not to revelation or apart from revelation. My Christian faith is intellectually defensible.

The fact that a lot of people believe in the Bible is not a reason to believe, but it is not a reason to disbelieve either. The fact that a lot of people disbelieve, is not a reason to believe or disbelieve either.

There is, however, plenty of evidence to support the accuracy of the Bible. Most important is a complete alignment of the Bible with all verified scientific facts, and indications of a very advanced knowledge of nature by the authors centuries and millenia before such knowledge could be reasonably deduced. Example are:
--verses that recognize that the stars are "hanging on nothing" when people believed the stars were pin-pricks in a sheet.
--verses alluding to star vibration, a only recently verified phenomena.
--verses that tell of ocean currents (rivers in the sea) centuries before maritime knowledge discovered their existence.
--advanced sanitation rituals, which is unheard of from the then nomadic Jews, when the most advanced "medicine" of the day treated almost everything with some variation of dung compresses (Egypt). Our modern medical germ/infection theory came from Monks trying to apply Bible principals to preventing the spread of Black Plague.
--Knowledge of at LEAST a 16 hour time zone differential, well before 100 AD.

Any place where science and the Bible conflict, science can either be completely disproven or shown to be highly unlikely, or scripture is being completely distorted (i.e. Gallileo's trial for "heresy").

Compare this with the Koran that claims the sun sets in a mud-puddle in India.

Secondly, each passge of the Bible has remained unchanged since it was written, STARTING about 4,000 years ago (and ending a little less than 2000 years ago). Gaps will exist in old manuscripts that began to rot, but when it is pieced together, what we have today is what they had back when it was first penned. People from a wide variety of backgrounds and historical perspectives are in complete agreement about all doctrinal points. Claims of contradictions in the Bible twist isolated passages out of their context in a sad attempt to discredit a book that is literally "God-breathed".

Read the Bible with an open mind. Its truth will become apparent to you.

Hi Christians - like so much individuals - reside by means of a suite of values which they keep to be foremost. You would possibly discover it uncomfortable, or cheesy, that their statements appear to be "I do not believe you, however that is adequate" - however all of us make the ones judgments at all times, Christian or no longer. My individual ideals aren't devout, however I am particularly opinionated and feature a enormous notion that I'm correct mainly (despite the fact that I would possibly not suppose what I did the day past, and won't suppose the equal the next day). If any person says whatever outrageous like "XXX Brand frozen Pizza is first-class" or "you will have to take a look at a few of this home manufacturer beer" I do not say "I'll pray for you" or "Love the sinner, hate the sin", however I do say "no longer quite to my style" or "I'm complete, thanks". I'm definite that after individuals say matters you discover uncomfortable or disagree with (that is quite often greater than part the time) you discover one-of-a-kind methods of claiming "I do not agree, however that is OK", perhaps you are saying "mmmm I'll feel approximately it" or "allow me get again to you on that". The backside line is - should you get disappointed approximately what you feel different individuals are considering after they say matters, you are going to discover a) that you've got an terrible lot to get disappointed approximately b) you are going to spend time making an attempt to determine whether or not you will have to be disappointed or no longer. Now I have a entire lifetime in entrance of me, full of possibilities and demanding situations and hardships and (with a bit of luck) fine meals and wine. If I waste one moment of that lifetime making an attempt to determine whether or not I will have to believe angry by means of whatever or whether or not any person's making an attempt to pass judgement on me or what they are considering me at the back of their phrases - then that's undoubtedly a waste or a sin or blasphemy or anything your phrase is for it. Anyway - have a hiya now and check out to not fear approximately what the Christians are considering!

To be honest, I don't think I've seen a statement like that from Christians here more than maybe a half dozen times.

Of course the number of adherents tells us nothing about the quality of the religion, as you point out. But I think that Christians are at least as likely to think there are only a few "true Christians" as they are to think that their overwhelming numbers validate their beliefs.

The Bible is inspired by Jehovah God.
2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.
False religion has misrepresented God's Word the Bible by their actions. That's not God's fault. That religion will have to answer to God for their actions. The Bible is perfect. I have studied and studied and tried to find a contradiction and have not found even one. If someone tells you they have ask them to show you in the Bible. I guarantee they will not be able to.
Listen to Jehovah God and his Son Jesus Christ, not man !!!
Man has dominated man to his injury. God can not lie.

It sounds to me like the logic you are rejecting by others is the very same logic you are using to validate your own viewpoint.
I must say I disagree with your assertions.
If you reject the authenticity of the Bible based on manuscript evidence then you would have to reject every ancient document for the same reason.
Have you ever actually read the Bible?

Religions notoriously ruled by fear. They had their book (the Bible) to pound these fears home. But fear rule finds it can not sustain it forever. The educated now know better.
