People seem to be answering you based on whether it's annoying for you, not for your previoius employer. After working in human resources for a brief time, I recall the people that handled W-2 getting all exasperated each time another employee asked for a copy. It means extra work for them and is usually due to someone being irresponsible (as is the case here). They do have a copy of it, as is required by law, but generally, when it's close to filing and someone asks for another copy, the people I worked with at least would get quite annoyed. Mind you they would never say anything to the employee or ex-employee asking for the W-2, but once the person was out of the office, the comments ranged from "What an idiot, waiting this long to do their taxes," to "Do they think we have nothing better to do than fix their mistakes," to "I can't believe it... not another one." Honestly though, don't let that worry you. It is part of their job to keep those records. Please do take the time before you go down there though and look around to see if you find them. Also, you may have to get an extension for your taxes if they can't get you your copy in the next few days.

It is more work than just making a copy of the w-2 your employer keeps in their file.
We have to print an entire new w-2 form with the part B for federal filing.
At this late date, we have put away all of our blank w-2 forms (if we even had any left), and we have finally closed out our 2006 year, and it can be a small hassle to re-open it.
How much trouble it will be all depends on the size of the business.
What may be a breeze for one person, may really be a pain in the rear for someone else.

As a payroll preparer I do find it annoying if you keep asking. However if this is a one time thing just go ahead and ask. Remember they may not be able to get it to you in time, depending upon their finance department. I can get mine out very quickly but some of the larger corporations can not and some smaller business that have outside account also cannot get them out quickly. If you do not owe any taxes I would suggest you file an extension and continue looking for them and if you dont find them then request a copy.

The term originated from the word 'peeve.' A 'peeve,' meaning something that is particularly irritating or annoying, is a relatively recent word. Its first printed usage was in 1911. The term is a back formation from a 14th-century word: 'peevish,' meaning ornery or ill-tempered. The phrase 'pet peeve,' a uniquely personal irritant, first appeared in print in the early 20th century. My Pet Peeves - 1) When the phone rings during dinner. 2) When a coworker tells me he or she has the flu and we are working together all day. 3) Rude elderly people in a grocery store. I almost forgot - I HATE COLD RESTURAUNTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's probably a very common request that they get right around now as the deadline approaches. Sure, they're probably annoyed, but such is life. You aren't the only one asking for a copy about now. Don't worry about it -just ask.

if you know they are in your house i would take a few hours to go thru everything before asking my former boss to go thru all his stuff to find your w-2. Your boss, unless his business is very small, probably has a service that does w-2's and he will have to contact them to get you another copy.
