Yes you can use butter instead of oil, but you generally do need one or the other depending on what type of cake you're making. You need something to moisten the cake so if not butter or oil then applesauce, some other type of pureed fruit, some pudding, or mayo can be used.

I disagree. I never use oil (or butter) and I still think the cakes are yummy. They're also healthier. I had a butter/oilless cake this weekend. Sure it's not as moist, but it's much healthier. Give it a try.

Yes, you can use butter. Just melt it first, and measure the same as the oil. However, if the recipe calls for butter you can’t substitute oil, as it will not set up the same.

Yes, you can use butter, it will taste a little richer, you can also substitute apple sauce for the oil, which will give the cake moisture, but way less calories.

A few times when I ran out of vegetable oil that I needed for a recipe, I melted an equivalent amount of shortening in a small pan on low heat, and used that. It seemed to work.

I use unsweetened applesauce for white and yellow cakes and I use canned pumpkin for chocolate cakes..... instead of oil. It takes most of the fat out of the cake and it is still moist and delicious.
