It's not. I used to work in daycares back in the 80's. It's not new age. Furthermore, sending a child to his/her room was being done when I was growing up, and even when my parents were kids.

Purplebirch, timeouts were still used more often than spanking. Being sent to your room is time out, even if it wasn't named as such.
Sending my son to his room doesn't work all that well since He has a LOT of toys in there. Quite frankly we have nowhere else to keep them.

Sinister, I agree that many pro-spankers here on yahoo think time-out is new age. That is what provoked me to write this question. I kept reading it a lot and it was starting to annoy me. I also do agree that there is a war going on on both sides.

d4cav, Yes lots of people here on Yahoo has made reference to time-out being new age. Of course I don't hink spanking is new age. Generations have used it in the past, but that doesn't mean it worked. It made people more hard-headed, less flexible, among other things.

Chloe, it's not 10 seconds per year. It's a minute per year, and I agree with one person's comments. This may be where there is a change in HOW time-outs are done. Now if you put a child in time-out for a few hours or even an hour it constitutes neglect. Long time outs create lethargy in the child and serve no purpose.

Armywife, I already answered your question in response to someone else. Please see above.

Time outs are not new age! They are another form of punishment, not really designed to teach, but to reinforce a power structure based on arbitrary consequences.

Would you like a prize for your new found knowledge? Are a few extra points ok? Thanks for mine.

By the way.... I have never heard of time outs being refered to as "New age discipline" . I'm a mom of 2 and use all forms of discipline and growing up I was punished just as many others were. Time outs- sent to the rooms-loss of priveledges....spankings. Nothing nobody hasn't already heard of.
and to Chloe:
Its not 30 seconds for every year they are older...its 1 minute per age. (4 years old= 4 minutes--which at that age is a very long time to be sitting still) very effective when used right. spend too long in timeout and the wrong doing is forgotten and replaced with when will i get out? Time out is designed to think about the wrong they did and the consequence,

because there is this huge war going on between parents who think the only way to discipline is spanking and those who feel that spanking is tantamount to abuse. Those against spanking call spankers abusers and spankers call us new age freaks with horribly bad children. Keep in mind that this is pretty much limited to the fanatics on each side, most people think its your right to choose how to discipline within your own family. It's just that the fanatics are more vocal about their ideas on the issue.

When i was growing up in the 80s my parents used to ground us and send us to our rooms. It was the time out in the same sense that i use with my child but the concept is the same. In my opinion time outs work much better than spanking a child especially a young one!

The phrase is newer, and so is the concept of putting a child in time-out for some ridiculous amount of time, like 10 seconds for each year of their age. It used to be you go to your room for a few hours or stand in the corner, not sit in a chair kicking and screaming for 30 seconds while your mother holds you down and says, "Mommy doesn't like that. You're hurting mommy's feelings."

No one ever said it was "new age", but apparently you who support "no spanking" think that spanking is "new age" and should be banned. Personally I say to what works best for you. If time outs work, great. If spanking works, good for you. As long as you aren't abusing your child, do what works for your family.

They consider it "new age" because they have advanced at least temporarily, from the earlier forms of physical punishment. This is used more at the schools now, and at an earlier age.

Probably because when we little, our parents just spanked us.

You are not supposed to send your kids to their rooms for time outs. Their rooms are supposed to be a peaceful, happy place.

it's "new age" to replace a serious consequence such as spanking with a lessor one like time out. however, yes time outs have been used for years.
