I agree with your mother and I'm happy this country still has a line of decency that should not be crossed. I was afraid that had disappeared. In response to the comment concerning Blacks being held accountable, that is not the issue. That African-Americans use the same words does not make it right. I can't raise a legal defense to speeding by saying that "other people were driving faster than me and you didn't stop them." Black community leaders are trying to stop the use of these hate words. The fact that rappers use similar words is irrelevant. It is not right for them to use these words, but the topic of the day is Don Imus. He degraded what should have been a moment of glory for a group of young women who have achieved greatness both athletically and academically. "They do it, too" is no defense.

I believe that everyone should be held accountable for the words they say or use. Everyone will and has messed up at one point in their life and has said something he or she has regretted. When that happens, the person should make the appropriate correction and take responsibility.
That being said - I also believe that our society has become one where it seems to be popular and "cool" to make fun of and degrade our own race, color, religion, etc. just to cut a song for a new C.D. or to make money.
How many artists today use the "n" word to make themselves sound cool in a song ? Everyone is responsible for their actions and we cannot go around degrading our own race and then chastise someone else for doing it.
Self respect has to come first and then respect for all others.
I respect your question and it is a good one.
Imus is an idiot - that is no secret. There is a system in place to take care of these types of violations and I hope that the system works in this case. The system must be consistent as well and these types of degrading words should be dealt with across the board (on songs as well).
Thinking that Imus will change his ways will only show our ignorance and refusal to see what he actually is.
Bigot's come in every size, shape, and color. It's up to us all to stop it - period !

Your mother is absolutely right. When I sat down with my parents and my grandmother after hearing the statement about Nappy Headed Ho's, tears were in our eyes and furry in our hearts.

Other races do not understand the word n*****, nappy headed, buckwheat, etc, because they never endured our struggle. Our men could not defend us 200 years ago, when those words were called to us. But now, when a person of another race publicly announce his insane view of our black women or demoralize our black men, not only our we offended, we also know that Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the like will step in and demand what we once couldn't. And for those who cannot understand why the comment was offensive, it goes beyond your comprehension.

He's a clod and should not have said what he said but to be FORCED to resign or be suspended...no. The radio station should be the ones to decide whether or not THEY want that kind of person on THEIR airways...not Al Sharpton.

Freedom of speech has to mean something in this country and freedom to not listen should be considered as an option too.

i agree he should have all those fines..and loose his job...what he did was wrong...but...is it not wrong for a black man to say it...put it in music...say it on television,movies,books...A rapper can call women hoes,bytches,slu-ts what ever he wants...because it is a black thing...wrong...they are all wrong...what in this world makes you think..it's okay to call a women those names...and what is so fair about another man call you anything out of character...because he is black....i don't care if he is green...not a man in this world would walk straight...if he called me anything like that
