I have a 2000 Ford Focus who is in need of $1200.00 in repairs, every time I turn around there is something wrong with it.
In the 7 years I've had the car I had the mouth of the motor repaired, a new transmission and many other repairs, and now the struts, suspension and stabilizer link are in need of repair. The majority of the 2000 Ford Focus were lemons, I had 2 relatives who's Focus's left them on the street, so far after all the repairs on mine, it's still running. I have been approved for a car loan, but now that I see the prices and how much I will pay for a new car, I'm not sure what to do. My place of employment will be moving farther away, meaning more driving. Should I stay with my old car or buy a new? Your advise will be greatly appreciated.

The answer here is obvious. Look at the facts:
1. You are driving a lemon
2. You are a young woman commuting alone for a long distance
3. The best "new" car is a 2 year old car that someone else has taken the biggest depreciation hit on.
4. Look at Consumer Reports to see the best deals on used cars. Honda and Toyota are always up there
So, go get a "new" used car. Good luck.

Well, its not that the early focuses were lemons, they just had a lot of recalls. thats where ford realizes their mistake and is taking effort to correct it. I had the 27th focus built for america. i had 2 recalls in the first year. i traded it in after 25 months and 34000 miles (thats what happens when you are a car lover and you also sell them). My old focus is still seen around town ( i sold it to a local school janitor) and he has 211000 miles and still no trouble.

My point is, its not that Fords are junk. Any car built by a human can have problems. Any car built by a machine operated by a human can have problems. You have had your vehicle for 7 years. I believe its time for a new one. I dont know where you live or the road conditions, but consider a Subaru RS sedan, a Nissan Altima, a Toyota Carolla, or even a Ford Fusion V6. Those are all vehicles that get around the same fuel mileage as your Focus.

Just stay away from Kia, Hyundai and Suzuki. Those are throw away cars.

FORDS are not trash thank you very much, but in this case i would consider buying a used honda or something for all the driving your going to be doing and get the most out of the focus as you can as far as money. maybe a trade in? or if you can afford a new car?

I can't tell you what you can afford, but it does sound like the car you have is just going to keep costing you money. Maybe it makes sense to buy something more reliable. How a bout a one or two year old HOnda or Toyota? They are much more reliable especially if you get a certified pre-owned one from the dealer.

With the price of the Lancer, Rabbit and Sentra today, I would buy a new one. There is great peace of mind having a warranty. You can keep sinking $300/month into the car or you can make a $300/month payment on a new one.
