i have been dating a smoker for 3 1/2 years as well. I have tried asking him to quit numerous times, all too which have failed. The only thing that is going to work is your boyfriend has to WANT to quit. Pestering him will only make him want to smoke more from the stress. :) 1/2 pack a week is pretty mild for a smoker however, my boyfriend smokes a pack every two days. I would simply let him know how it effects you and that you are simply worried about the long term effects- or try having him cut down on the number he smokes now, not quit, just give up a few, and see how that works. However, if he has no desire to, there is little you can do. good luck girl.

There is nothing you can do. He'll quit when he's ready. And if he only smoke a half pack a week you should count your blessings, the average smoker in America smoke 1 1/2 packs a day, I smoke just under a pack a day. It's a nasty habit but a habit all the same.

Talk to him about it and tell him how you feel about him smoking. Set a goal. Each week that he doesn't smoke, give him a reward, getting bigger and bigger, start out with some chocolate or something, then a special night out, finally, something he's wanted for awhile. If he truly loves you he will try to stop. If that doesn't work, you could always take the cigarrettes away, especially if you live with him. I think the first way would work better though.

1/2 a pack a wk is great, that's about one a day, smoking was never a problem until they were smoothed where you could smoke all day long. one a day, a stogie or pipe isn't that bad health wise.

talk to him about your concerns and why it bothers you.
just because you have let it go for that long doesn't make you stupid or something--it just means you tried to deal with it and the fact that you can't is fine, it's your choice.
explain that you tried to deal with it but x, y and z is really getting to you and you would appreciate it if he didn't smoke around you anymore.
do activities that are in a non-smoking setting.
show him things he could be doing with the money he wastes on ciggarettes each week.
don't kiss him if he smells of smoke, make him brush his teeth first.
don't feel bad about wanting him to quit-you should have no guilt. you want him to be cancer free, have healthy lungs and white teeth---there is nothing wrong with that.
:)

A 1/2 a pack a week?!?!....That's not much hunny, you should just let it go and let him enjoy his little smoke once in a while. If he gets to be smoking more, then maybe say something to him, otherwise why give him grief over that.........it might cause problems in your relationship unnecessarily.

Honestly, you can't make someone break a habit that they don't want to break. The only thing that you can do is choose if you want to continue living with him with this habit. If the answer is no, and he wants to be with you, he will have to choose which one is more important. You shouldn't be commited to him until he has quit for an entire year, unless you are willing to live with this.

You can't. If you don't like smoking, why did you pick a boyfriend who smokes?
