I hope you've taken note, and are at the vets already.

It is not always appropriate to make a dog vomit when they've ingested something poisonous - you'd have to check, but I think rat poison may be one of the things that causes a lot more harm on the way back up.

Also, rat poison contains warfarin, which can cause uncontrollable bleeding. Even if he did puke all the rat poison up and was OK, you'd STILL need to go to the vet for Vitamin K shots to prevent bleeding - and for monitoring and possibly a drip.

Hope you've come back from the vets and that your dog is fine by the time you read this!

He needs to get to the vet ASAP, but if there is a reason you cannot go there immediately, feed him Hydrogen Peroxide (about 3cc for every 10 pounds of body weight). This will make him vomit without causing him any harm.
If he has gotten into rat poison, he will also need an injection of Vitamin K to counteract the poison, which is very fast acting.
Addition: No, the peroxide will not have any reaction with the poison, it's what the vet will likely use anyway.

The best thing to do is go to your vet, but when my dog ate 7 brownies I left out on the counter, i called the vet and he instructed me to give him 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. He is a 75# american bulldog/shepherd mix. He vomited the chocolate within a half an hour, and was fine. But if you arent sure how the dog will react to what he/she got into, calling the vet will the be best bet.

Take your dog to the vet and go home to do some investigating. If you see the suspected harmful thing that you think your dog has swallowed call the vet and tell him. If the nearest vet is far away call ahead and ask what you can do. If all else fails you should ask your vet if it would be ok to give it charcoal. Make shure you give your dog pleanty of fluids.

My medium size dog got into mice poisoning last year, it was on the week-end and I called the Emergency Vet and I was told to put 2tablespoons of peroxide down her throat. It worked, she vomited and she is fine to this day!!!

You can give him a cap full of peroxide, however if he had rat poison take him to the vet imediatly. Do not call just take him.

Depending on what he ate, it might be even more harmful to make him vomit. It's best to seek veterinary assistance. If you have the label of whatever it is that he ate, make sure to take that with you. It will help the vet determine the best way to treat him.

Feed him some grass (lawn), dogs seem to like it and it makes them vomit and poop. I can always tell when my dog has an upset stomach cuz when I walk him he'll start eating the grass, next thing I know he's vomiting and pooping, its a sure remedy for dogs.
