I was born and raised in Canada, and still residing here.

Please only give an answer if you are 100% sure on the matter and also don't bother posting of you are going to say anything like "ask a recruiter". Thanks.

As a U.S. citizen* you may enlist in the Navy (assuming you meet the other enlistment standards). But what if you are a non-citizen? You can still enlist as long as you meet the following requirements:

1) Entered the United States on a permanent residence visa or have an Alien Registration Green Card, and

2) Established a bona fide residence, and

3) Established a home of record in the United States

* For enlistment purposes, citizens of the United States include citizens of the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Legal permanent US residents with a Green card may enlist, but they may NOT become Officers, nor may they get a job that requires a Security Clearance. Additionally, they will not be allowed to re enlist without first becoming a Citizen. The good news is that the residency requirement is waived to military personnel and you can apply to become a citizen after 12 months of Active duty service.

You don not need to be a citizen. The military excepts green card holders ) Permanent Residence. This is also a way you can receive your US citizenship (upon proper time being a green card holder which is 5 years then you must apply for citizenship).

I know we have many non us citizens that join the service, but before they can re-enlist after their first 3-4 years they must become us citizens. Hope that helps.

You can join with a green card. I know this for a fact and served along side a few who did so.

And you should ask a recruiter. Go right to the source.

Good luck and thanks for having the guts to serve!
