I live in a Victorian terrace and the stairs are not very wide; I'm wondering if a runner would look okay. I have been on some websites and the runners looks lovely but also expensive, especially the hardware. What is best to fit on the runner, rods or clips. Also, I live in a small town and am finding it difficult to locate carpet people to do the job, most are trying to talk me into regular stair carpet. What are the pros and cons of runners?

carpet stair rods are more classy but i would consider the width of your stairs you don't want it to appear even narrower

I can't think of any pros or cons regarding runners as long as they are properly installed. When they install the carpeted stairways, they use tack strips to secure the carpet. You could do the same thing if you wanted.

If you have a hard time finding local people to make the runner, get the measurements and either use the Internet or phone another cities custom carpet store and they should be able to help you. Good luck

All are useful but if you are on a budget, then why not get ordinary carpet and fix to stairs with the carpet tacks along the side and under the edgings.
I would if you can get them the rods, at least they would be secure, all the way down.

My daughters had this done, their local carpet supermarket cut it to size and had the edges `whipped`. It looked stunning the wooden stairs were stained and the whole thing looked stunning. But they have 3 dogs and in the course of 3 years the wood has been scratched and the edge of the carpet has become a little tatty. If you don`t have animals I would go for it.

I personally put a runner down that I bought at my local hardware store from a bulk roll . I kept it in place by screwing deck screws into the carpet. The screws sink into the carpet and you never see them, easy to remove when you want to chage the carpet

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/gmxu8
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.
