Living with your girlfriend will not work if you are planning on staying in the US legally. If you do decide to move to the US, you either have to be petitioned by a family member that is a US citizen or your girlfriend to marry you to be petitioned as a spouse or a fiancee.

Check out the USCIS website (www.ucscis.gov).

The fiancee visa will be a k1 category, usually runs from 7-9 months average in processing, you can only enter the US one time and will have to marry within 90 days, then you file papers to adjust status to get your 2 year temporary greencard.

The k3 is the spouse visa, where you can marry in your home country and you can be petitioned as a spouse. Processing times may vary from 7-9 months to a year. The CR-1 is another spouse visa. Processing time is about the same as the k3 and k1 but you get your greencard a month or so when you arrive (another temp greencard good for 2 years but you do not have to file extra papers as the k3 and k1).

The fees have changed in the past 2 years so check out fees at the uscis website.

Hope this helps.

If you are Canadian and want to visit her from Canada you can go across any time you wish, but staying there permanently is a VERY different thing.

Entering USA temporarily, and using your driving licence or passport, is considered the same as being given a visitor visa.

Entering USA with the intent of staying there is very different and you will need to obtain an actual visa for this.

You will need to apply for the visa and there will be a considerable amount of work required to obtain it, beginning with a valid reason for wanting to live there.

You have certain qualifications that must be met, including work experience and education levels. You will also need to have a sponsor who will give a guarantee that your expenses will be covered by them if you do not have work or if you are ill.

The visa process, if you make the qualification levels demanded, will take a minimum of a year, and possibly two.

If you have a potential employer in USA and you have some exceptional work skills that others are unlikely to have, the employer can get a green card for you.

If you have enough money to invest in USA in the form of opening a new business, and giving guarantees of the operation, you can get a visa fairly soon. You should plan on having a half-million dollars for this.

Alternatively, you can marry your girlfriend and then get an expedited visa clearance, but it will still take about a year.

Simply to "live with your girlfriend" isn't going to get you into the US. Ever.

Try the library for books on how to get into the US. NOLO Publishers do a good line of books on the subject.

It takes more than wishes to apply and be accepted.
