I am looking for a timeline kist that is approximately 8 1/2 x 11, but is folded, acordion style, so that it can be opened to several feet long. I want a blank timeline so that my child can fill in the events herself. I need something other than a roll of paper (too flimsy). It needs to be a good cardstock weight so that it will last and we can build upon it throughout the schoolyear.

Hi Juliart- :)

A good resource for homeschool curriculum is
"Christian Home Educators Curriculum Manual" by Cathy Duffy
check it out and other good resources at:
http://www.cathyduffyreviews.com/

She has a list of time line resources, and her Curriculum Manual has been very helpful!

Another option for a timeline that you can easily display or store:

We purchased a roll of 24" wide freezer paper - made from 40 lb. virgin bleached white paper and coated with 5 lb. polyethylene on 1 side.which is much thicker and sturdier than regular wrapping paper. I also purchased a tube mailer that was the same length as the core the freezer paper was on and taped the end of the paper to the tube mailer to make a kind of scroll.

We were then able to open the time line up as needed to add events and people. As we moved along in time and the timeline got too large to fit on the table, we would simply roll the already completed sections around the tube mailer.

We keep our current section in the middle with the older stuff wrapped around the tube mailer and the blank paper still wrapped around the cardboard core. We can unroll it to display my son's progress to family and friends, and then re-roll it to put it in the closet.

We are in our second year of using this same roll and it has held up well. Works great!

You can do this yourself fairly easy. Just use Word or Publisher and make the timeline with the years or eras. Then print on card stock and tape them (use nice tape if you want) accordian style.

I have a wall timeline, and I use the figures from Amy Pak at Home School in the Woods. They are wonderful. If I had the money and hadn't already purchased the first three sets already printed, I'd purchase the CD-rom.

She has a great page of timeline helps.

Here is an online store that sells them. Covers my whole hall when opened up. http://www.learningthroughhistory.com/Store/CategoryTimelines.html

Hope this is what you are looking for.
