I would love if you could give me a quote and a source. Also, what was the original goal?

The original goal of the war in Iraq was to rid the country of weapons of mass destruction which it was alleged Saddam Hussein had lying all over the place.

The present goal is to stabilise the country and quell the insurgency, hand over power, and the administration of public order, to a "democratically elected" Iraqi government and its army, and subsequently to withdraw coalition troops.

The Wikipedia page below is an excellent source of sources, if you see what I mean.

The initial goal was to remove Saddam from power. Mission Accomplished.

Second goal was to establish a new Iraqi Government voted on by the people. Mission Accomplished.

Third goal was to train Iraqi police and establish and train a military army so Iraq could defend itself. Mission in progress and doing well.

Fourth goal was to help the Iraqi's rebuild their cities and economy so they could be self supporting. This was to be done with money from the sale of Iraqi oil. Mission is successful, and ongoing.

Once goal three and four are met, we can go home. The problem is in getting those two goals met. This is where the insurgents are causing all of the troubles. They need to be delt with much more harshly, but the US and its allies are reluctant to interfere with the new Iraqi government. We want them to handle their own problems as part of the training and transition. This is the part the squeemish anti-war liberals cannot stand. All they see is negative, negative, negative. Not sprising.

I think I vaguely remember something nebulous like eliminating terrorism. We are doing this by occupying a country and trying to force feed democracy down their throats.

This is akin to telling a prisoner, "The torture will continue until your morale improves".

Actually, I believe that we are in Iraq to provoke the Iranians into a conflict, but they have proven to be too smart for that.

today's goal is to prevent the puppet government we installed from collapsing and to make Halliburton richer than most 3rd world countries.
The original goal was to take out revenge on Saddam under the guise of protecting America from WMDs, by virtue of a pre-emptive strike.
