I bought my cat a laser, and it played to catch the red dot for a while. It was enjoying it. My roomate pointed the laser in circles in her face for a slight instant. It became very scared of the laser dot and when i tried to calm her down by petting her, it scratched me (deep deep scratch). i slapped the cat across the face as a first reaction. and I put her in the bathroom as I cleaned the blood from the scratch. She has always been scared of the bathroom. Now she is terrified of the bed on which she played with the laser, she is terified of the laser and she is terrified of me. She was very agitated that night and hid all night under my bed, she still hides a lot (comes out to eat only). How can I make it up to her for my mistake. Will she ever forgive me. I love her and I am sorry, How do I make her know that and get her to act normal again and sleep on my bed nex to me like she did b4? Besides I was very scared she might have a heart attack (she is 8 years old)

As others have already said, lasers should never be pointed at anyone's eyes, be they human or animal. You might want to get her checked at the vets to ensure no damage was caused to her eyes.

You are the cat's mother substitute and when she was afraid and lashed out, you smacked her. (Imagine how you would feel if a hand the size of your head hit you). Then you put her in the very room that she is afraid of. I'm sorry, but your actions have only served to make her feel insecure and she has lost trust in you.

Cats should never be disciplined physically as this only adds resentment to their fear.

It's going to take a lot of patience on your part for you to regain her trust and it will have to be on her terms. You don't say how recent this incident was, but it may take a long time for her to become relaxed with you again. I don't know how many times a day you feed her, but divide the meals into smaller portions and feed her more often, so that she will need to come out of hiding more frequently in order to eat. Let her come to you, rather than you pursuing her as this will only stress her. Talking to her into a calm voice will help. All cats are different and depending how sensitive your's is, you may also have to accept that your relationship with her may never go back to the way it previously was, but as I say give her lots of time and hopefully she will learn to trust you again.

To be perfectly honest, if anyone deserved to be slapped across the face it was your roomate for their stupidity.

You should have slapped your roommate instead of the cat! You should take that laser away from your friend first. Never, ever shine the laser in the cat's eyes. For example, have you ever had a camera flash in your eyes and you can't see right after, or you see big spots? That's what the laser did for your cat, so no wonder she freaked. The laser could also have damaged her vision. Lasers are okay to play with, in fact it can be good exercise for the cat. Also, 8 years old isn't that old for a cat -- it's upper middle-age.

So now you're going to have to win back your cat's trust. The first thing to do is don't push it. Patience is needed because your cat could have some vision problems now, and is still afraid. You can offer her treats, speak to her quietly and just sit there. Don't try to grab her because that will just scare her more. Eventually she will go back to being her old loving self, but it will take time and patience. Weeks at least.

Maybe you don't have the temperant to own animals. You first allowed your friend to point the laser in your cat's eyes, which is horrible torture in itself. She was probably blinded for an instant and instinctively swiped at you when you tried to touch her. Then you slapped her!!!???!!! you are lucky i dont know you or i would call the animal police or SPCA. And after that, you put her in a room that you knew she was frightened of?

your pet is like your child, would you do this to a kid too?

As to how to make it up to her, I don't know. Have some (non-harmful) toys and treats on the bed, don't crowd her, and take her to the vet to make sure no permanant damage was done by the laser or the slapping.

You must NEVER NEVER point a laser directly at a cat's eyes or anyone's eyes! It is a LASER, for pity's sake! Better take your cat to the vet to assess any damage to the cat's cornea. Your freind is a fool. There are actually instructions and a WARNING on every laser light and packaging that tells you NOT to point the laser beam directly into the eyes of any living thing. The cat may have had his vision impaired and in panic, he attacked.
If you care about your cat, take her to the vet to see if there has been ny damage done to her eyes.

What is wrong with you ?!!!
You do not deserve to own a pet if this is how you treat them !!
How would you like being treated that way for being frightened....I'm sorry but, people like you make me sick to my stomach.....animals are trusting and loving and deserve better than you.

If you have any hope at all of rebuilding a relationship with your pet, it will take time, patience and understanding.
A cat will only strike out of defense, Flash the light in your eyes and see what you do and how you would respond towards whoever did it.

Give you kitty ALOT of love and tenderness if you have it within you to do, if you dont, dont punish the cat for someone elses stupidity and adopt it to a home that will care for it.

Do not point a laser into anyone's eyes, human or pet. It's going to take some time to build her trust with you again and get rid of the laser.

If you play with your cat using a laser , you must be responsible otherwise exactly what happened will happen . Never, ever , point it in anyomne's eyes especially animals.I have laser , but I am a responsibler human being and no better not to point it in his eye. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for you , you should not have any pets if you are going to be irresponsible. My sympathies for the cat !

In some states it is illegal to point a laser beam at anyone's eyes.

Your cat should have scratched the VERY THOUGHTLESS person who did this to her!!

And it was thoughtless of you to slap her -- why why why? did you do that?? She was SCARED!!!

Take her to the vet to make sure she does not have any eye damage from that laser please!
