It depends on the setting. Home on the couch grabbing them out of the box is informal. But I've served at some high-end banquets where cookies were the dessert. Usually served with a fancy ice cream and tastefully arranged around the ice cream and drizzled with something. All those snotty people think it's a fun dessert. Proving that nobody's ever too old for cookies!
