My thighs and bum are getting bigger from excessive cycling. How can I cut down? Don't tell me to stop. How should I cycle? Heavy or light gear more?

For better or for worse, cycling does tend to increase the size of legs, particularly the quads. For most people, this is a good thing. The size is the result of muscle, not fat. It is largely a function of body type and metabolism. You could try to use a lighter gear and maintain a good RPM as you ride, but I not sure how much effect it will have. Some people have the ability to add muscle and some don't.

You should check out the book "Fitness for Dummies." I know it sounds strange, but there is a good concise description of body type and the difference between fast and slow twitch muscles. It could be helpful.

Biking will increase muscle tone, hence if you ever see cyclist legs they look like watermelons.

But for cardio, it's excellent! If you ride, stay on a “low” gear (easy pedaling with no real tension on the legs, strain increases muscle), no hill climbs and stay on the flats.

Break-up your routine with swimming and light running. Be sure to check with a physician or a personal trainer to determine the best suitable workout for your body type. Enjoy!
