tell him to send in a minimal amount, if only $10, and call them and/or put in written request to establish a payment plan. for 2007, he should file estimated tax quarterly (form 1040-es) so it doesn't build up like this during the year and you have this problem again next year.

Farmers don't pay federal taxes? Since when?

He has income, he is required to pay taxes. I'm surprised that it's not more than $700. If that's what he owes, he'll have to come up with it someplace. The IRS allows payment plans, but it will cost him extra to pay it that way.

Are taxes deducted from his paychecks? If so, he needs to have more deducted so he's not in the same situation next year when he files. If taxes aren't deducted from his checks, I'd double check the tax calculation - the $700 sounds way too low.

Good luck.

Negotiate with the IRS and offer what you can actually pay per month without taking food from the family plates or the roof over their heads. Start by calling 1-800-1040 which is one of those automated irritating sources but you will eventually get through. Average wait is around 45 minutes before you speak to an agent, so amuse yourself with a computer game or answering Yahoo questions. Do not hang up as it starts all over again. The longer you put it off, the higher the interest you must pay in the final settlement. You can counter personal fear instilled by the dreaded IRS logo by remembering, we have no debtor's prison in the US, and while you may be obligated to pay, you wont be jailed even if your best effort is slow on accessing funds for payment. The interest just builds up and they can garnishee your wages, but won't if you have made payment agreements.

The IRS will work with him on a payment plan, tell him to call them and explain the situation and ask them for suggestions... they have always actually been really helpful to me with any questions I have had, just go to the IRS site and get the phone number, it's easy and free for advice. If you cannot afford $700 for taxes, maybe the only solution will be to sell a small amount of the land to get some income?

I would find some way to come up with the money, once the IRS starts on you, they are like a rabid dog. They can also seize assets and foreclose on the farm to get theri money.

If he can't come up with 700, then he needs to get another job, and run the farm as a sideline. Good luck

Contact your local IRS dept. ASAP to see if a payment plan can be setup. If your bf belongs to a professional farmers association, reach out to them. Also, maybe the state agriculture dept can supply some advice.

Hoping for the best for you.

Tell your Bf to join the Military and go fight in Iraq or Afghanistan - that income is far more than $400 per week, it's tax exempt, and it comes with free medical for dependents and housing assistance - tell him to marry you and you can reap the bennies!
