CAts don't stink, actually it is dogs who stink and need washing, whewreas cats are self-cleaning. Cats may cause bad smell in 2 ways:
a. if you don't clean their litter box
b. if it is a male and it is not neutered, so he starts marking his territory
What your mum needs to know, is that a dog is MUCH more trouble than a cat (training, barking, needing attention, walking, cleaning, etc) and what you need to know is that a puppy is very cute too, so if your mum is OK with the responsibility involved and realizes that she must not get rid of the dog when the problems arise, but that she must solve those problems, it is great to have a puppy too.

I just got a puppy and I also have 2 cats. I would say the "stink" factor is the same... as long as you maintain a cats litter box every day then the smell is minimal. Our puppy smells and we cannot get his coat to smell better..
Also- kittens are much less work. Puppies have to be walked like 6 times a day so you have to be home a lot. Kittens and cats take care of themselves and you can leave them for a couple of days with no worries. It really is a matter of your opinion.... but dogs are much more work than cats. Good luck!

puppies stink the house up until they learn to do their business outside. then you have to clean up the poop cause that will stink (espically in the hot weather).
you have to bath them at least once every 2-3 months depending on their coat. also brushing as well. they do stink if their bathing isn't kept up. especially after a rainy day outdoors.
kittens/cats are festidious about cleanliness, but their litter box can stink if no one cleans it out. The more you keep the littler clean you will never even know it is there. however the dust from the litter (clumping litter especially) does get all over. keep it in an eccessable place for kitty as they like their privacy but out of your sight and you should not have any problems. if you are looking for easy maintenance, get a short haird breed, tabbies, bombays are all nice cats and quite playful and affectionate. get them from a kitten and they will grow to your desires, you train them how you want them to be, the more attention you give them that is what they will crave as they get older and so forth.
ps siamese need constant companionship, or another cat playmate, so do some research on what cats are for what types of lifestyles

Kittens play alot, are wild and crazy for about 1 1/2 years or more Can you deal with that? Do you and your family have a gentle hand and a gentle way with amnimals? They need to be treated gently.
Kittens grow into cats. Cats live for up to 20 or more years.
Are you and your family committed to caring for your cat (who will be a member of the family once you bring her home) for that long? Vet visits at LEAST once a year, spaying or neutering so no more kittens are born (there is a HUGE pet overpopulatin problem in this world -- please don;t add to it).
Food, water, bed, litterboxes, love, making sure you friends don;t treat your cat or dog badly -- Obedience classs for your dog (they AND their owners need this!)
Making sure your cat stays indoors and your dog is behind a safe fence so no one goes into the street and gets killed.
For a cat -- you nee to Scoop the box at least 2x a day -- change ALL the litter and Wash the litter box at least once a month.
As for dogs and puppies -- Try not to Hate anything. It's not good for your heart or your soul.
Dogs live anywhere from 10 to 15 or more years. Are you committed to caring for a dog(who will be a member of the family once you bring her home) for that long?
Dogs like to roll in poop, mud and dead squirrels and stuff like that.-- DOGS would stink alot more than cats.
But whether you get a kitten or puppy -- they are a BIG responsibility and you canot stop caring for them just because they get older.

Cats don't stink unless its right after they come from the litter box (that only lasts like 1/2 an hour) I personally prefer puppies, but I have a cat and love him more then anything.

It's the litter box that smells, not the cat. And a litter box that is not properly taken care of can smell awful. Maybe if you make the deal that you will clean the box twice a day she may give in. But there is nothing wrong with a puppy either, as long as someone can take care of it. Puppies are a lot more work then kittens.

Cat litter trays stink, if u clean them regularly and get some hygienic cat litter, this reduces the smell, cats are very independent, they clean themselves and when trained only poo in their litter tray, they defend themselves and pretty much find their own food whilst out, all they ever want is a gentle stroke here and there and their meeoowwws are so loving, dogs on the other hand do poo where ever they want with owners going around with a poo bag to pick it up, u have to take dogs 4 walks, whilst a cat takes itself 4 a walk. I am all 4 cats!!

Cats & dogs have personalities like people. It depends on what you're wanting out of the human-pet relationship. If you're wanting to be greeted at the door with an anxious warm fuzzy, I'd suggest a dog. Granted, I know cats that do this too. Make sure allergies aren't an issue. Cats seem more contented with smaller quarters, but unless you get a small dog, they're gonna need room to run & play. Different breeds of each have different traits too. Shop around before you decide. I'd suggest a local animal shelter & they're a great resource if you're not sure what you want. If you can't decide, get guinea pigs! They're great fun, easy to keep, easy to clean cages & don't eat much. :) Good luck!

Only get a puppy if it will be well taken care of. Walked every day and so on. If your family is busy and not home too often a cat can take care of itself. As long as you clean the cat litter it won't stink. I really hate people who get dogs and don't take proper care of them - not mis treating them or antyhing but most people think that if they have somewhere to walk/run around by themselves it's fine - ITS NOT!! They need to be walked for more than excersise for behaviorial reasons too. Good luck! Whatever you get you'll love it!
