my maltese puppy is 6 months old. i love him very much and have never ever been mean to him, but he is either extremely intelligent or extremely stupid. he reads my body language and runs away from me anytime he senses that i might put him in his little room or do any other thing that he doesn't want to do. i spend half my time trying to lure him with treats. btw, this doesn't work. he's so stubborn, he won't come even though he is dying to get ahold of the treat....i've tried a leash in the house. that is a major hassle. what should i do?

Tie the leash to your leg in the house. This is a very poorly socialized puppy be sure you friends don't go to this breeder

No dog is stupid!!! I don't know how long you have had the puppy but sitting in the floor having it's toys around you and trying to get it to play is a good start. Dogs are very smart and can read our body language. The leash thing will not work it will make the dog only want to hide from you even more.e I used to have a dog and very time I would attempt to try and put a leash on my dog she would run. At 6 months old your puppy is still considered a baby. You have to have lots of patience's to have a puppy. Thats why some people make the mistake about getting a puppy because they look so sweet but when they get them they don't want to work with the dog. It is hard work. I have a 11 week old lab. so I know what I am talking about. She is potty trained already m it took me 3 /1/2 weeks!. When I brought her home I would hold her close to me to try and make her feel safe. Just play with the dog as much as you can to make the dog feel safe!

Become a better actress : P Or try a different tactic, most dogs are not really that intelligent, they're just reacting to stimuli, try reading up on Pavlov's experiment. Your dog probably reacts to the treat as a stimuli to run away since you probably use it everytime you take him to his little room. By changing the stimuli you can lure him into going into the room. Try playing with him instead, and scratching his belly(most dogs I've tried it on seems to love this), then if he follows you around hoping to get more belly rubs, try luring him into the little room and give him a belly rub there. That way, going into the room becomes the stimuli for a good belly rub and he might become more willing to enter on his own if he thinks he'll get his belly scratched.

You need to make that spot a pleasent plcae for him. My dogs get crated when we leave so they do not get into anything that may cause them harm. They actually like their crates in fact even sometimes when we are home and they do not have to be crated they like them. The way I did it was I did not put use it as punishment, I would tell the bed time when I would put them in it and I put a blanket in there with them. I tell the god girl every time I put them in the crate and until they got used to it I would give them a treat after they were already in the crate. And yes they do read us ke a book. My dogs even seem to know how to tell time, as when it almost time for the kids to get home from school they start hanging out by the front door (they go to back door for potty) and tails wagging and get all excited. They are very in tune with us and they do seem to be able to even read our minds at times. Good luck hope this helps you out some.

i agree with alanc_59. lure him with a treat or toy to get him to go in his little room or something. my husky puppy is getting better now that i have more treats and toys for him. just dont yell or get impatient. i remember when i was growing up i was stubborn just like that dog lol.

its seems you've tried every option i was going to suggest! my dog loves his treats, i have never known a dog who would pass treats no matter who much they wanted it. try using some little bits of meat, they smell much better than treats.

Maybe hes scared of you. Do you use hand gestures if so it might be scaring him. Go pick him up and feed him his treats.

Teach your puppy to respect you. Make sure you behave like the boss of him, and not like he is your boss. That means disciplining him, and dominating him when he tries to do his own thing. Be conistent.

reassert yourself as the pack leader. Keep a calm energy about you so he doesnt feed off of your negative energy.
