taking place on their campus...Bob Jones University, a fundamentalist Christian school, until recently did not allow interracial dating.

Both are fundamentalist schools, claiming to do the work of Christ...both are basing their "morals" on the Bible....but, we have established that none of these things are prohibited by the Bible.

So, are fundamentalists out of touch? What about all other issues facing us today...again, if we can't believe them on the issues of interracial dating, drinking and dancing. How can we respect them on more pertinent issues?

I know this was asked earlier...but, wanted to hear more opinions.

We can note that these schools may not believe that all people should believe the same thing. This may be a personal preference that these schools believe. We can say that these issues are not biblical mandates, but they are valid beliefs. It is not so bad to have a personal preference not to drink. I am fine with alcohol, but I am fine with those who believe that it's not ok with them. The Bible says that those who are more mature should be graceful with those who are less mature and not cause them to stumble. As long as they realize it's a matter of preference and not a biblical mandate. If they don't realize this- then that's an issue!

Baptists have always discouraged drinking and dancing. I am unaware of any prohibition against interracial dating. The Bible does say that "wine is a mocker". First Corinthians 5 tells us not to keep company with a brother who is a drunk. It says "don't even eat with him". As for dancing, you must realize that the first Baptist (aka John) lost his head because of the way Solome danced. It's no wonder that Baptists don't approve of dancing. The Baptist church covenant stipulates that a Baptist is not to use alcohol as a beverage. If you want to use alcohol, don't become a Baptist. By drinking, you are breaking the covenant you entered into with the church before God, when you became a member. Whether God thinks drinking is right or wrong is one thing that may be undecided, but He does speak harshly about those who break covenants. You ask "how can we respect them on more pertinent issues". I ask, how can you respect a religion that sways with whichever way the popular wind is blowing? I applaud them for sticking with their principles. Face it, if they were aiming for a popularity poll, they would accept anything and everything, but they are trying to turn out good, God fearing leaders for tomorrow's church.

Bolivar doesn't even have MTV on the cable. I know someone who lives there, and I'm told it is because SBU consideres the channel offensive.

Used to, you couldn't pick up radio stations near Central Bible College in nearby Springfield (personal experience). Don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard they try to block radio stations near their campus. I've also heard you can be thrown out of school at CBC if they catch you in a rock concert or movie theater.

Yes, I believe they are out of touch with the reality of the modern world. Imagine if they took over the whole country!

There is a Christian college near mine. It's called Liberty and it is so strict. Until recently girls weren't allowed to wear pants on campus and guys always had to wear a tie. At dances, nobody is allowed to touch and not even to hold hands. No kissing in public.
If you are gay at that campus then you will recieve hate emails from your fellow Christians.

That Southwest Baptist college sounds just as worse espcially about the interracial dating.

However, we must remember that fundamentalists are in pretty much every religion so I ignore them unless they are threatening my rights or life.

I would be surprised to hear from them that either claimed their campus codes were based on the bible, I think they require male students to wear ties and that's obviously not a biblical commandment.

People deprive themselves of all kinds of things, thinking that it is pleasing to God. Thinking that God keeps track of our morality and our sacrificial rituals to go without for the sake of him. He doesn't care about those things. There is nothing we can do to earn our way to heaven and this is the general thinking of that. We can only please God through what Christ did on the cross, as that is what makes us rightous in his eyes. In God's eyes he cannot look upon sin and he doesn't have to now that they've been paid for by the son. That is the only thing that keeps us all in God's grace. It's not about US and what we do, it's about Christ and what he did.
