This morning I was lying in bed, half asleep, then all of a sudden my body felt paralyzed and I thought I was being electrocuted. I had a full body shake and I could not stop myself. All I could do is let out a scream. It did not hurt, but felt as though I was having a "seizure". I am on Effexor XR and I have heard of brain shivers, is this one of those? It has happened before, can anyone give me any idea about what it could be?

I have an appointment tomorrow. And I know it is not a seizure because my brothers have them, but I moved as though I was having one. Also, I try to tell my doctor things and he doesn't believe me.

***My ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Now reading that your brothers suffer from having seziures, increases the likelyhood of your experience being a seziure (although I'm pretty sure it wasnt from what you describe) Also note that there are different types of seziures (generalized, partial) and are diagnosed by looking at what part of your brain was related to your seziure. A seziure which was related to the Frontal lobe of your brain would be the most likely considering how you described it. These seizures are usually very short and often occur during sleep. They may be described as twitching or a funny feeling in the face, a finger or leg. The person may be aware all of this is happening (simple partial seizure). Sometimes the head will turn to one side, and the arm on that same side will stiffen. In other cases, very bizarre or complicated movements of the entire body can occur. The seizure may spread causing awareness to be affected and jerking of extremities may happen. If you feel your doctor does not believe you, you should find a new doctor whom you trust and feel comfertable with. Reguardless if your doctor does not believe you, you are aloud to request a referral for a neurological exam/ aka MRI or fMRI (functional Mri).

My original answer:
im not sure that you can scream while in seziure. I think you would actually know for sure if it were a seziure. Honey, my best guess is that you were half asleep, inbetween your sleep stages. There is a thing called sleep paralysis, where your body is paralyzed yet your mind feels awake and alert....its a glitch in your brain not waking up fully and usually lasts only a min or so. It is sort of uncommen, Although i havent heard of a body sensations with it...yet the body and brain are very random and have a wide range of behaviors that can occour, especially during the sleep/wake cycle. Maybe tell your doctor, but i dont think you should worry unless it happens again soon. My best guess really is that it was a rare "glitch" of your brain while waking up from one of the stages of your sleep. Have you ever had the sensation of FALLING, which wakes you back up while trying to fall asleep.....sounds like your situation could fall into this catagory of rare things that just sometimes happen while sleeping.

Are you on any medications? If so... some medications if not taken right can have negative results such as seizures, dizziness, passing out... etc. I know if I don't take my medicine for 2 or 3 days I start feeling really weird.
Or if your taking a new medicine your body may not be accepted of it.
The best thing you can do is go to your appointment. If your doctor doesn't believe what you tell him then flat out ask him for his true opinion and why he thinks it's not feasible. Good Luck, Hope it's just a miner problem that's easily fixed...

I take Effexor XR!
(Brain shivers don't feel like a seizure!)

These usually only happen when you haven't taken your Effexor in time and your body goes through seratonin withdrawal. It feels like sudden jolts of dizzyness, not shaking.

DON'T STOP TAKING YOUR MEDICINE. Seratonin inhibitors are meant to be weened off of. You can't just stop taking them. Otherwise your body goes into somewhat of a shock and you can have mental problems associated with physical problems.

Definitely see a doctor asap!

Contact your doctor immediately, it may be you need a smaller dosage -- and if it has happened before, why have you not already called them to get an appointment? What if you were driving when this happened, would you not feel guilty for not recognizing the problem before you potentially injure or kill another driver? This is a serious matter, take it as such and see your doctor for help!

You should talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Ideally, you should get off the commercial pills with the help of your doctor and try alternative medicine. I think medical psychology is too for-profit, too impulsive a solution on the part of doctors/believers.

If your current doctor doesn't believe you, find ANOTHER doctor! This doesn't sound like something you want to take chances with!

your not getting the energy your body needs. your boddy spazzed out because it dident have the energy or sleep it needs. just eat healthyer or more. also dont do drugs if you have in the last 2 weeks. your body could be using its energy to fight it off. i would just eat more or healthyer get more sleep and drink alot of water.
